Hospice building in the snow

Moments that Mattered...

Simple every day pleasures that most of us take for granted are treasured moments here at our hospice home…

…children building a “snow family” in the courtyard to the delight of folks in our dining room
…residents enjoying a candlelight dinner with their loved one on February 14th
...colourful birdhouses built by students from Stratford Secondary School that will delight our residents
…caregiver Cupids spreading Valentine’s spirit throughout the house
…gathering round the table to celebrate Family Day
…sausages, maple syrup and PANCAKES!

Hike for Hospice...

As most of us shovel through February snow, our dedicated volunteer committee is actively planning the 6th annual Hike for Hospice. Set for Sunday, June 7th from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Stratford Perth Museum we hope you will start planning too!  Hike the Tom Orr Trail, visit the Museum’s exhibits, and wrap up the morning with a BBQ lunch, music by Dan Stacey and games.

We’re thrilled to acknowledge the tremendous support of the following sponsors confirmed to date:

Sponsorship opportunities are still available! If interested, please contact Lucie or Michelle.

On Sunday, June 7th let’s come together to raise funds, honour lost loved ones, and make new memories. For more details, please visit our website: rotaryhospice.ca

Shout-Out to...

  • Our heartfelt thanks to the Rotary Club of Mitchell for hosting another successful Hearts for Hospice fundraising event on Saturday, Feb. 8th. Executive Director Lana Burchett was the lucky bidder on a chocolate-peanut butter pie – and the team here were the lucky taste testers!

  • The staff of McCutchen & Pearce who donated the proceeds of their staff dress-down days!

  • The shop and art class students at Stratford Secondary School for the handmade and hand painted beautiful new birdfeeders! Once spring arrives, they will go outside our residents’ rooms to add to their view.

  • Our friends at the Rotary Club of Stratford for their generous donation from Catch the Ace! Stop by the Festival Marketplace every Saturday morning to purchase your card and play.

  • On Saturday, February 22nd the annual Service Club Bonspiel took place at the Stratford Country Club with 8 teams, representing local service clubs, participating.  Promoting the spirit of friendly competition on the ice and fellowship off the ice, the event included a raffle with proceeds designated to our Rotary Hospice. Thanks to the generosity of the bonspiel participants we received a cheque for $270! Our thanks to all involved for choosing Rotary Hospice as recipient of funds.

Treating the Person Rather Than the Disease...

TED Talks video: Palliative care physician, Timothy Ihrig explains the benefits of a different approach, one that fosters a patient's overall quality of life and navigates serious illness from diagnosis to death with dignity and compassion.

A Tip of the Stetson...

Goes out to our hospice volunteers who supported members of the staff team at our Heartburn Day booth themed The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.  There was nothing but Good in their welcoming smiles and infectious spirits as they served up Gunslinger Chili, created by our Kitchen Coordinator Michael.  We were shooting for the People’s Choice title but missed the target this year however we'll be gunning for it again next year.  (Yes, these are groaners but we couldn’t resist!)
