Exterior view of Hospice on a sunny day

Moments That Mattered...

  • Nurses Week and Personal Support Worker Day were celebrated collectively in May with a lot of "pun"! We are so incredibly grateful for the Rotary Hospice Clinical Care Team and all that they do!
  • Introducing our two new hospice pets: Whiskers (cat) and Winston (dog). These adorable robotic animals are a welcome distraction for everyone when visitors are limited.
  • Celebration of Volunteer Appreciation Week April 18- April 24. We love our volunteers, and even though we celebrate them any chance we get, this week was all about them!
  • Receiving a final pledge payment from Quadro Communications on a three-year, $150,000 commitment. Our sincerest thanks for their tremendous gift and commitment to community.
  • Celebrating Easter with great food, family, crafts, conversation, treats for all and even a surprise visit with one of our PSW's pet rabbit.
  • A resident was greeted with a birthday surprise when she opened her door in the morning — “Happy Birthday” signs were scattered all around the hospice to recognize her special day. You could see her face light up even under her mask!
  • The sign of spring - blue skies, fresh gardens and so much new green…wait a minute, is that volunteers we see, cleaning up the flower beds?

Volunteer Appreciation Week

We continue to miss all of our volunteers and the life they bring to our house and families. Although we couldn't share our appreciation in person, a fun message was shared to let our volunteers know how appreciated and how missed they all are!

Come on in and hear what we had to say!

A Letter from Mom...

"The power of good-will among strangers"
A woman in the prime of her life, living as she had hoped and planned in a nice house, in a nice neighbourhood with her two children and a wonderful husband and their pet dog. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer. She received surgery and treatment with little success. Her doctor said there was nothing more to do than to go home and be with her family. I met her at this time. She told me about how sad she felt that she would not see her children grow up and that they would not know her.
She agreed to meet a hospice volunteer. Read more here (this article shared from our friends at Hospice Palliative Care Ontario (HPCO)).

Let's Hike for Hospice!

The money raised from this event supports end-of-life care for people living with life-limiting illnesses, as well as supporting their loved ones. Last year’s event raised over $84,000 thanks to the participation of almost 200 hikers, dedicated sponsors, and countless donors. With a goal of $95,000 this year, Rotary Hospice encourages the community to get involved.

“Our 6th Annual Hike for Hospice was a heartwarming and resounding success despite the change to a virtual format,” says Dennis Young, Board Chair of the Stratford Perth Hospice Foundation. “In fact, this format allows ‘hikers’ to participate in a way that suits them best and is in keeping with government guidelines. It could be a walk with their dog; a hike with their family on a nature trail; or hitting their treadmill at home, at their own pace. Most of all, it’s a day to do something for yourself while also supporting your community.”

For the third consecutive year, Ontario Home Health returns as the Trailblazing sponsor of Hike for Hospice. Other returning sponsors include Tradition Mutual (Gold sponsors), Woodcock Brothers (Silver sponsors), and McCutchen & Pearce Professional Corporation (Bronze sponsors).

To register or sponsor a hiker, please visit: Hikers are reminded to follow all protocols in place by their local public health unit.

Congratulations to Laurie Brown...

We would like to congratulate Laurie Brown on being awarded the 2021 June Callwood Award from Hospice Palliative Care Ontario (HPCO). Laurie has been a hospice volunteer for over 10 years and has supported Rotary Hospice Stratford Perth since its inception.

Laurie has given countless hours to support community clients long term and sat vigil at the bedside of strangers so that they would not die alone. She provides emotional and practical support to our residents and their family, volunteers at our reception desk, supports our fundraising initiatives and has shared her personal story of loss and grief with thousands of people to raise awareness and essential funds for our home. Laurie was the very first individual donor to our capital campaign and continuously demonstrates her commitment to palliative care in our community as an ambassador for Rotary Hospice.

HPCO’s June Callwood Award acknowledges and thanks outstanding hospice volunteers throughout Ontario and we are honoured to recognize Laurie as our 2021 recipient. We are fortunate to have Laurie on our volunteer team.
Nurses' Appreciation Week and More

National Nurses Week was celebrated May 10th to 16th with the theme #WeAnswerTheCall which was to showcase the many roles that nurses play in a person's health-care journey. Here at Rotary Hospice our entire Clinical Care Team models this theme in all that they do, every day.

Also celebrated collectively was National Personal Support Worker (PSW) Day on May 19th.
