February is for crêpes, love-food and podcasts

Winter is not over yet - my weekly fruit and vegetable box is still full of root vegetables, cabbages, leeks, apples and pears. I'm so glad OddBox sent some peppers home from Spain that would otherwise have been wasted!
Fortunately, February has a few celebrations and the French love to celebrate with food! On the 2nd of February, for "la Chandeleur", we flip crêpes with a coin in our left hand for good fortune. For "la Saint Valentin", we eat aphrodisiac food. Allow me to say that love-food is welcome not only on the 14th of February so listen to suggestions from the "On va déguster"  podcast.

What classes are on?

Do you know that the Cook and Speak brunches can also be vegan and delicious? Vegan, vegetarian or flexitarian, bring your friends and family, and come to play with flavours and senses.

Fancy a learning gourmet lunch? There is still time to get a virtual food tour of Paris in February. Cheese lovers or connoisseurs will enjoy the all about cheese class in March, or come and share your views about French food stories and latest culinary trends in April.

If you prefer dinner classes, in February we'll be sharing childhood food memories in French. In March, you will talk about and cook like a chef and in April you will decide which type of French restaurant you prefer and how and what to order on the menu.

Other dates and menus may be organised to suit your requirements - provided a minimum of 3 participants.

My favourite French food podcasts

It is not a secret that at Cook and Speak we like to know the stories behind the food we eat, the secrets of people who grow or prepare it and the places where it comes from. Podcasts are also a good opportunity to improve listening skills for high intermediate or advanced French language speakers. Food podcasts are booming and here are my top 3:
  1. Sunday mornings, some people go to church, others stay in bed with the newspapers... if I don't host a Cook and Speak brunch, I usually cook for family or friends listening to "On va déguster". Guest chefs, food growers or wine producers, all selected according to the topic of the day, share their stories with a group of inspiring food and wine critics. La "cerise sur le gâteau" (the cherry on the cake): recipes of the day are available on France Inter website
  2. "'À Poêle !" podcast (note that "à poil" pronounced the same way, means naked in colloquial French..): Twice a month on Thursday, Julie Gerbet, a food journalist, asks chefs to share their passion for cooking, their relationship to creation, their favorite products, their sources of inspiration. She goes into the intimacy of her guest chefs who share their food memories and love affair with food.
  3. Although I am not vegan, I think the way we eat has a big impact on our environment: I want to understand and make food choices based on evidence, balancing the pleasure of eating varied and tasty meals with the respect of people and the planet.  "Les carencés" podcast  looks at veganism in a positive and very instructive way, once a month.
February Recipe

Chocolate, ginger, spices...to name a few, are assumed to be love-food.
The recipe of the month combines 2 ingredients that I love: matcha tea and chocolate. It is on the menu of the April Cook and Speak dinner. Those small cakes are a real pleasure for the eyes and for the palate. No need for a romantic dinner to bake them!
February small pleasures

I don't celebrate Valentine's day but do love romantic escapes and we just visited a beautiful Canary island attached to Lanzarote,  Graciosa. a small heaven of peace and beauty to me.
I shared a delicious lunch with a girlfriend from my childhood at Greenspares. It will most probably become my go-to coffee place in my neighborhood.
I am planning to visit the new plant hub and academy in East London for a meal or even better, for a course. There is always something to learn in the kitchen!
On the cultural side, I spent my evenings watching MyFrenchFilmFestival, an on-line festival of new generation French-speaking cinema all around the world. I can't wait to know which film is going to win!
Finally, I can't miss major French artists exhibitions in London; everybody is raving about the Bonnard's colour of memory at Tate Modern so I'll go very soon.
