Love My Hood: Kitchener's Guide to Great Neighbourhoods

The City of Kitchener's #lovemyhood neighbourhood strategy encourages residents to take the lead developing local projects with city support. This strategy supports resident-led projects such as community gardens, traffic calming measures, neighbourhood markets, street parties, and much more.

I joined the Neighbourhood Strategy project team in 2015. Our group was unsure what exactly the outcome would be but we knew we wanted to make it easier for residents to do great things in their neighbourhoods with the support of the city. Approximately 18 months later, our project team presented the city's first ever neighbourhood strategy to Kitchener Council. We called it #lovemyhood and were thrilled it received unanimous support from Council.

One year later, I was fortunate to again present to Council about the city's first neighbourhood action plan on behalf of the Victoria Park Neighbourhood Association (VPNA). Applying the #lovemyhood strategy, the VPNA engaged with neighbours to identify priorities for our neighbourhood. Through a variety of engagement activities including a street party with free FourAll ice cream (pictured below), we identified several priorities we are currently implementing.

I believe that an engaged city is one that builds on strong neighbourhoods and connected neighbours involved in resident-led activities. I am proud to have been part of both sides of this new strategy: creating it with citizens and city staff, then implementing the strategy at the neighbourhood level. I'm running for Council to continue developing strong neighbourhoods, built on active and engaged citizens supported by the city.

Neighbourhood Happenings
I loved browsing through the many classic cars on display July 13th as part of Kitchener's annual Cruising on King (above).

Kitchener has several amazing local brew pubs. Local musician Tessa Jennison played at Together We're Bitter - located in our ward - as part of their Sunday afternoon live music series (below left). Descendants offers a variety of fun events including music bingo on Thursday nights. I had a blast playing along with several other local political candidates on July 5th (below right).
