Overview of upcoming work as of July 02, 2019

This past week, crews made progress replacing and retrofitting curb ramps throughout the corridor. Over the next couple weeks, crews will continue final restoration work, including sidewalk and curb repairs and adding topsoil and seed in planting strips.

What to expect during remaining work

  • Typical work hours: Monday – Saturday 7 AM to 5 PM
    • In observance of the July 4th holiday, crews will not work on July 4 and 5
  • Detours for people walking: For your safety, please follow detour signs near work zones
  • Traffic lane shifts: 1 lane of traffic in both directions will be open at all times.
    • Flaggers will be onsite, as needed
    • Turns may be limited to and from intersections while crews work on curb ramps
  • Parking restrictions: On-street parking will be restricted near active work areas to provide a safe space for crews to work

Project Update

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share feedback with us about 35th Ave NE. We share your interest in roadway safety and while it takes some time for users to get used to a new roadway configuration, we continue to monitor how things are working. Here’s an update on our continuing evaluation.

Revised speed limit between NE 65th and NE 89th streets
As many already know, speed is a critical factor in the severity of collisions, contributing to 25 percent of the traffic fatalities citywide. We collected speed data on 35th Ave NE in early June. Based on this data, we plan to revise the speed limit to 25 mph in the retail business district from NE 65th to NE 89th streets by mid-July.

We are also committed to performing additional speed studies later this summer. We will use the resulting data to determine whether the posted speed limit should be revised further on the remainder of the corridor.

Pedestrian crossing counts
We recently collected pedestrian crossing counts at locations that were requested by the community (NE 50th, NE 77th, and NE 87th streets) to evaluate possible locations for additional marked crosswalks. The first counts were done before the end of the school year to include school walking trips. Unfortunately, none of these locations had high enough pedestrian numbers to warrant marked crosswalks. However, we did find that NE 50th St is seeing an increase in pedestrian traffic now that the new sidewalk is installed. We will repeat these counts later in the summer to see if there is a change.
Reminder: no parking on the west side of 35th Ave NE
We’ve heard from many neighbors that people are still parking on the west side of the street in some locations. South of NE 85th St, there is no parking or stopping in the southbound direction.
