Principal’s Update
Dear Parents/Carers,

I am very proud to have recently received a lovely letter from Plymouth Marjon University, informing me that some of our previous students, detailed below, have graduated this year.

Chelsea Robinson BA Hons Children’s Physical Education

Kira Izzard Foundation Degree Arts: Early Years

Devon Latimer Postgraduate Diploma Early Years with EYITT (salaried)

Thomas Ranford BA Hons Sport Development

It is always wonderful to welcome former students back to the College and share their success. Kira was so excited to show us her graduation photographs and she wanted to inform the current Year 11 and Sixth Form students that ‘determination and sheer hard work will always pay off’. Well done to all our graduates of 2018.

It is not just our former students who are being so successful, many of our current students do amazing things every day. Sometimes, a conversation in a corridor or lunch hall can yield information about a student being selected to play county football, volunteering at a care home or winning a national competition, all of which I had the pleasure of finding out during a lunch time, whilst talking to our students.

If your son/daughter has achieved success at something outside of College, please let their tutor or pastoral leader know, so that we can share and celebrate in their success. Our website is a fantastic vehicle for doing this.

I am looking forward to sharing more student successes in the future and also feedback from our recent parents’ evenings.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Bevan
Principal

Operating Theatre Live
Year 13 students from across the PLE partnership are studying Science courses that allow progression to careers such as those in the medical professions.

To support their learning and careers progression around 60 of our Level 3 Science students attended a practical surgery course delivered by ‘Operating Theatre Live’ on Wednesday 26th September, including students from Sir John Hunt, Tor Bridge High, Lipson Cooperative Academy, All Saints Academy and Marine Academy Plymouth.

This experience covered an introduction to medicine/health as a career through a real surgical experience in their operating theatre.

Throughout the day, students demonstrated outstanding communication skills and teamwork and worked together with excellent results. We are hugely proud of the way they responded to a very demanding day and helped to make the day a great success.

Fantastic Fortnight
Congratulations to Summer, Jasmine and Chloe for winning the latest fantastic fortnight competition.

Year 10 have been getting cards awarded for excellent work and effort over the past fortnight, which led to a draw taking place in their assembly.

Well done to everyone who managed to get a card, keep up the good work as there will be more opportunities over the coming terms!

Year 9 Democracy in Action
Following the successful election of our Year group representatives, each of the new candidates were given the opportunity to put their names forward to represent the Year group at the whole College council. Colbie, Hayden, Ray and Billy all presented their manifestos in assembly by giving a short speech to their Year group, or in Hayden’s case a prerecorded video!

Each tutor group had also previously nominated a charity that they would like to be considered for the Year group to support, the nominations were:
  • The Little Princesses (who provide real wigs to children who have lost their hair)
  • Cancer Research UK
  • St Luke’s, Keep me close (neonatal intensive care unit at Derriford)
  • Meningitis Research
  • Support for raising the profile of the Meningitis Research Foundation through sponsoring an ex-student to climb Kilimanjaro
  • The winners of the College council and Year group charity were decided through tutor group voting which were collated and announced in assembly.
Congratulations to Billy Smith and Colbie Bishop and the Year group charity Cancer Research UK.

I look forward to working with the Year group representatives to decide on how we can raise funds to support Cancer Research UK.

CURRICULUM
Year 7's Leading the Way
During their PE lesson Miss Warring’s Year 7  group have been learning how to be good sports leaders. They have spent their time practicing skills such as communication, team work and organisation.  This week a number of students delivered the PE lesson to the rest of the group.  Dulcie and Sky stared the session with a warm up they had planned, Cameron, Bailey and Fedra then followed with a game called End Zone, a mixture of Netball, Handball and American Football. Finally Luke and Reece planned and delivered a dodgeball session. All of the students showed excellent leadership skills and they were able to explain the rules and regulations of their activity and officiated the games whilst the others played.

Well done to those students who have now gained their Gold Leadership Award.

Maths Trip
On Thursday 8th November, I took 4 Sixth Form students to Coombe Dean School to enter into the Senior Maths Challenge. There were four rounds all consisting of challenging group problems. At the end of each round totals were collected and then added to the final score. There were 15 groups all from South West Region. The group that would come first would then represent the South West in the National Competition, run by Advanced Maths Support Programme. The Students worked exceptionally hard throughout the competition and placed 13 out of 15. The Students really enjoyed the challenge and glad they did not come last! Well done!
