La Gonave Hospital Need
June 2020

Recent news from Haiti with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic has been sketchy, incomplete and most likely inaccurate.  It's thought to be bad and quite likely worse than any reports had indicated. Just this past weekend conversations with Dan Irvine, World Hope Haiti Country Director, provided first-hand information from the Wesleyan Hospital on La Gonave.  The email from Dan reads in part:
I just got off the phone with Daniel Bertrand, executive director of the LaGonave Wesleyan Hospital and the news is grim. There are many confirmed cases on the island and even among the hospital staff. A nurse who was in contact with virtually all the rest of the hospital staff and who was careless about PPE protocol  is now obviously symptomatic and confirmed with the disease. She and others were of the mistaken opinion that the virus was not present on the island so she has the dubious distinction of being one of the first confirmed cases.

Director Daniel is charged by the Haitian Government to lead the corona virus response on the island with very little actual support. The Wesleyan Church has given an initial donation but the need is still urgent. Daniel must continue to hire a number of additional medically trained persons to staff triage stations, support a ballooning hospital census and replace infected permanent staff. A 90 day crisis period is projected and will cost the hospital between $50,000 and $60,000 USD above previous budgets.
Contributions are urgently needed to help Hospital Director Daniel Bertrand navigate the next 90 days.  Contributions may be channeled through Global Partners or World Hope International.

The COVID-19 pandemic has invaded Haiti on top of the political unrest, unreliable transportation, food scarcity, and rising inflation that has already ravaged the Haitian people.  All assistance is gratefully recognized.
