Through October Hothouse Global in the US is hosting special online screenings of 5 documentaries made by filmmaker Juanamaria Cordones-Cook about Cuban poets Nancy Morejón and Georgina Herrera, author and researcher Gisela Arandia, graphic artist Belkys Ayón and playwright and director Fátima Patterson. 1st October was International Coffee Day. Coffee in Cuba has a history intrinsically linked with slavery as cultivation arrived in Cuba with French planters, and their enslaved workers, fleeing the Haitian Revolution. Today the rich culture introduced by those people of African descent to eastern Cuba forms an important part in addressing the legacy. And coffee is part of daily life. Read more here
