Dear <<First Name>>
Wow – thank you so much!
A week ago, we asked you to contribute to our Easter Fundraising Appeal. In just six days, you have kindly donated a little over £1,800 towards our goal of £5,000. We are more than one third there already.
We still want to hit our target of £5,000 by the end of Easter, so if there is any way you could give something to help us that would be great. We have big plans for expanding our Fair Tax Now campaign, but we need your help to do that.
A recent meeting of tax justice campaigners and MPs concluded that what really makes a difference to public policy is lobbying that is clear and persistent. So far, over 300 of you have written to more than 200 MPs calling for a fairer tax system, a letter to which we were co-signatories appeared last week in the Observer, and our reports have been debated in the Lords.
All of this is to ensure that we have a tax system that doesn’t privilege the wealthy but instead serves the common good. In his book, Let Us Dream, Pope Francis reminded us that our goal ‘is not the sharing of crumbs from the table, but to make space at the table for everyone’.
His point was in our efforts to tackle poverty, we can sometimes assume that our responsibility is discharged if we merely give from our excess to those who are less fortunate, instead of asking the deeper questions about why they are poor in the first place.
Like many others, I received notification this week that my Council Tax is going to increase. I can afford that increase, but many of those on low incomes can’t. Campaigning for a fairer tax system is one way in which we make space at the table for everyone.
Thank you for playing your part in making that happen.
Justin
