FareShare - Fighting hunger, tackling food waste

Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of food is wasted in the UK every year, whilst millions of people are struggling to afford to eat.

FareShare are the largest charity in the UK with the goal of fighting hunger and food waste. The charity redistributes left-over food to charities in order to turn into meals for those in need. FareShare takes fresh in date and good to eat surplus from the food industry, which would otherwise go to waste (last year they managed to save 16,992 tonnes of food!) and reaches 1,500 towns and cities. The communities that benefit from their services include homeless hostels, children’s breakfast clubs, lunch clubs for older people, domestic violence refuges and community cafés. Last year, Fareshare redistributed enough food for 36.7 million meals.

The organisations that Fareshare supply food to are places that provide life changing support, as well as lunch and meals. FareShare saves the economy approximately £51 million every year, by accumulating food that would otherwise be thrown away.
