Introducing
Beverley Lawrence
About me
I was born in South Yorkshire and came to Hull University to study French and German and met my husband during that time. We moved to Beverley when we bought our first house. I have a son who currently works in Leicester and my daughter lives and works in Paris. I am passionate about France and Germany which may explain why my daughter lives in France! I am Head of Modern Foreign Languages at Beverley High School and really enjoy working with young people. As I write this I should be on a school trip with 40 students to Cologne…a disappointment for them and me!

My Connection with St Mary's Church
I first came to St. Mary’s Church when I was looking for a Church where I could see my children belonging to a Sunday school. I remember being welcomed by Frank Purkiss who asked if I would like to take my children to the Sunday school which was being held in the Parish Hall. The greeting and welcome from the Church I received then is why I am still worshipping at St Mary’s…25 years later. I am currently a Church Warden und trustee for Church Lads’ and Church Girls’ Brigade; two roles which I really love. Over the years I have met some amazing people through Church life; people who really are sincere friends.

What brings me joy?
When I was 17 years old I was asked by the priest in my Church in Barnsley if I would write something for the Newsletter. Here is something I said; ‘My whole aim in life is to be happy and by worshipping the Lord and asking for his guidance He will help me to achieve this’. There are many things which bring me joy but people are always at the heart of it…whether that is at Church, school, or with my family. I love being with others, going out for nice meals, travelling and for those of you who know me, of course, cake and chocolate!

Thank you to those who have sent through their weekly offering

We would be grateful if you are able to help us either by setting up a standing order through your bank (details below) or by sending a cheque addressed to 'St Mary's PCC' (preferably a lump sum rather than weekly amounts as this avoids multiple trips to the bank) to the vicarage - 15 Molescroft Road Beverley HU17 7DX

Prayers for the week beginning Monday 4th June
Our readings are about the Holy Spirit
(also broadcast on Facebook)

A simple form of evening prayer and candle lighting *

At St Mary's we would like to invite you to join us in a short time of prayer every day at 7pm. It involves lighting a candle and placing it in the window and then saying the following prayers as individuals or as households.  You can join with others in these prayers on our Facebook page.

The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.

Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

A period of silence for reflection on the past day may follow.

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The following may be listened to
I will sing with the Spirit -Rutter

The reading for the day (see below)**

The candle is lit and the following prayer is said
Heavenly Father, accept this burning candle as a sign of faith and love.
Like this candle, bring light into our world
Even as this candle is lit may we know your presence
and be consumed in the warmth of your love.
In your mercy, Lord hear our prayer.

In peace we will lie down and sleep;
for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.

Abide with us, Lord Jesus
for the night is at hand and the day is now past.

As the night watch looks for the morning
so do we look for you, O Christ.

The Lord bless us and watch over us;
the Lord make his face shine upon us and be gracious to us;
the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace.Amen.

The readings - The Holy Spirit

Monday  John 14:15-17 If you love me, keep my commandments. I will ask the Father to give you another Helper, to be with you always. He is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor recognizes him. But you recognize him, because he lives with you and will be in you.

Tuesday Romans 8:26 In the same way the Spirit also joins to help in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with unspoken groanings.

Wednesday 1 Corinthians 12 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit, and there are varieties of ministries, but the same Lord. There are varieties of results, but it is the same God who produces all the results in everyone. To each person has been given the ability to manifest the Spirit for the common good.

Thursday Ephesians 1:13-14 When you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed in Him, you were also sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. He is the down payment of our inheritance, for the redemption of the possession, to the praise of His glory.

Friday 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Saturday Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
