Introducing: The Bretts
About us
Hi, we are Chris and Lisa, and these are our children, Gabby and Aimée.  We love going to the 11:15 service at St. Mary’s. We live in Beverley but, growing up, we both lived in many different places. Chris’s family were in the RAF and Lisa’s family moved house for a variety of different reasons.  Reluctantly, Chris began to come to church when it was the choice between that or cleaning the kitchen floor. Chris is a Network Solutions Architect and Lisa is a Primary School teacher.

Our connection with St Mary's Church
Despite thinking that we would never go to the church that Becky is the Vicar of (because we thought it would make things complicated as Lisa is her sister) we started worshipping at St Mary’s about eight years ago. We were looking for a church that would welcome our vibrant, lively (some might say noisy) and exuberant toddlers as they were then. Becky promised that the 11:15 service would do just that, so we decided to give it a go. It is, at times, awkward for Lisa being confused for the Vicar but we love the wonderful friends we have made and feel very much part of the family. Lisa helps out with Sunday school and Chris can often be found behind the sound desk.

What are you passionate about?
We love spending time with our family. Chris was an only child and he loves the fact that he now has two sisters in Becky and Sarah and two brothers in Tom and Al. We love our nieces and nephews and the children are very close to one another. Lisa loves being outside walking or ‘running’ and the whole family have really enjoyed creating raised beds so that we can grow our own food. The peas and beans are coming on nicely but we have had less success with the tomatoes. Chris enjoys cycling and playing strategy games with the ‘board game geeks’ and we would all love to travel more.

What encourages our faith?
Our house group has been a great source of support. The most wonderful group of people go and they make us laugh such a lot.

Sarah Humphries
We are sorry to announce that Sarah died suddenly early on Sunday 2nd August 2020. She was an extraordinary women of great determination, kindness and faith.  She was loved deeply and will be sadly missed. Please pray for her close family and friends.
ASLAN IS HERE!
Please look out for the following characters:
From 14th August 2020
Aslan
Aslan the lion is the majestic creature who represents Christ in all the books. Here you see him completely still, bringing calm; grace and peace. He is resting within his paws on the stone table upon which he was killed but from which he rises from the dead.

Reepicheep
Reepicheep the mouse (from Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Last Battle) is a brave warrior who stands about 3 feet tall on his hind legs. Reepicheep values his honour and is deeply loyal to Aslan. He is shown in a Knight’s pose. One ear is turned to Aslan, listening.

The Bishop of Hull will bless our carvings on Monday 17th August and we will share this with you via video.
Pet Service
We are putting together a 'virtual' pet service in celebration of God's creatures.

If you would like to thank God for your animal friends (whether living or departed) please e mail a photo (stmarys.beverley@gmail.com) or share a short video with us on facebook. Please include your name and a short description of your pet and why you love them and we will create a service of celebration.

We need the information by the Sunday 30th August and the service will be broadcast on Sunday 6th September.

Church Opening

We are hoping to extend the opening times of the church building in August
The new opening times will be:
Monday-Saturday 11am-3pm
Sunday 2-4pm
We are still recruiting volunteers to welcome visitors.
 There may be times when we cannot open church but we will do our very best.
If you would like to volunteer please do get in touch.
Breakfast for children
St John's Church Bransholme are offering breakfast to children in their community who otherwise may not receive the nourishment they need over the summer.  If you can help either by donating healthy cereals or cash (in an envelope placed in the plinth marked 'breakfast') we would be very grateful. Anything that is not used for the children's breakfast will go to the foodbank which the church is also running.  There is a container at the back of church for the cereals.
Prayers for the 2 weeks beginning Monday 17th August 2020
(also broadcast on Facebook)

A simple form of evening prayer and candle lighting *

At St Mary's we would like to invite you to join us in a short time of prayer every day at 7pm. It involves lighting a candle and placing it in the window and then saying the following prayers as individuals or as households.  You can join with others in these prayers on our Facebook page.

The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.

Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

A period of silence for reflection on the past day may follow.

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The following may be listened to Take this moment by John Bell

The reading for the day (see below)**

The candle is lit and the following prayer is said
Heavenly Father, accept this burning candle as a sign of faith and love.
Like this candle, bring light into our world
Even as this candle is lit may we know your presence
and be consumed in the warmth of your love.
In your mercy, Lord hear our prayer.

In peace we will lie down and sleep;
for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.

Abide with us, Lord Jesus
for the night is at hand and the day is now past.

As the night watch looks for the morning
so do we look for you, O Christ.

The Lord bless us and watch over us;
the Lord make his face shine upon us and be gracious to us;
the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace. Amen.
