CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
  • There is no zoom Sunday school this week as we are offering activities at the 11am service but please do use the following at home.
  • Youth Group is starting back up today
  • Please send us your artwork, videos and pictures and you will win a star - 5 stars = prize.

Do, Make, Pray and Sing activities based on Matthew 18.21-35

Choose from these ideas to help the children make connections between the Bible reading and their lives

Pass the parcel

Play a well-known game to think about passing on God’s gift of forgiveness

You will need: wrapped parcel with small gifts or sweets in each layer, music and equipment to play it.

  • Play a game of ‘pass the parcel’.
  • After some children have had a turn to open the parcel, stop and ask: what happens if someone doesn’t pass the parcel on? Discuss how God’s forgiveness is like a gift to us, and because we are forgiven by God, we should also forgive others – it is a gift we can pass on.
  • Continue the game, asking the children to pass the parcel really quickly, especially if they have already had a turn to open it.

Not suitable for gathered groups (only for households)

Heart chains

Use the number 7 to think about having a forgiving heart

You will need: template, paper/thin card, pens, scissors.

  • Print enough templates onto paper or thin card for one per child. Invite everyone to colour in the number 7, at one end of their template.
  • Ask the children to carefully fold along each of the dotted lines in alternating directions, to make a concertina or ‘fan’ shape (pre-prepare for younger children).
  • Help the children to carefully cut through the whole fan to cut out the number 7, then invite them to open it out to reveal a chain of love hearts. Remind the group that Peter wanted to forgive seven times, but Jesus said we should always have a forgiving heart.

Gathered groups: prepare kit for individuals/household groups 72 hrs in advance.

Jar of forgiveness

Represent the way Jesus told Peter to forgive

You will need: small empty jars or bottles, one per child, some rice, PVA glue.

  • Give each child an empty jar/bottle and some grains of rice.
  • Ask them to glue seven grains of rice to the outside of the lid, then use the rest to fill the jar/bottle to the brim.
  • The rice on the outside represents how Peter suggested we should forgive, while the rice inside represents how Jesus says we should forgive. Encourage the children to take their jars/bottles home and to use them as a reminder when they need to forgive someone.

Gathered groups: prepare kit for individuals/household groups 72 hrs in advance.

Pray

Wash away things that need forgiveness

You will need: heart shapes (template), laminator, washable felt tip pens, bowl of water, towels.

  • Cut out and laminate a heart shape for each child.
  • Ask everyone to write or draw things that need forgiveness on their laminated heart, using washable felt tip pens.
  • Then provide a bowl of water and invite the children, one at a time, to wash their hearts in the bowl.
  • Talk about there being no limit to the number of times this can be done; they could write something else and the water would still wash it away. Discuss how this is like God’s forgiveness, which he offers to each of us.

Gathered groups: prepare kit for individuals/household groups 72 hrs in advance.

Washed away

Ask for help to forgive others

You will need: water-soluble vitamin tablets, pencils, a bowl of water.

  • Give each child a vitamin tablet and ask them to write or draw on it something they would like to forgive others for (lead pencils work best).
  • Invite the children to drop their tablets in the bowl of water and ask God to help them forgive.
  • As they watch the tablet disappear, encourage the children to pray for the person or situation where they need God’s help to forgive.
  • You may need to refresh the water in the bowl if you have lots of children taking part.

Gathered groups: prepare kit for individuals/household groups 72 hrs in advance but only suitable if you can provide enough items for one per child/household.

More prayers are available via the Prayers page.
