CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

This week we explore demonstrating priorities through action.

Prepare

Read Bible notes on Mark 1.29-39

A prayer of praise and thanksgiving for children

Lord Jesus,
we praise you for showing us your priorities
and how to live out a life of faith,
in action and in stillness.
Amen.

  • Encourage the children to think about the things that are important to them, the things they are concerned about and how they act on them.
  • Ask them to act out a mime of one thing for others to guess, e.g. looking after a pet, playing with a friend.

Stop and share

  • Discuss with the children why the people only appeared to see Jesus at the end of the sabbath (a weekly day of rest and prayer for Jews from Friday night to Saturday night).
  • Ask the children why they think Jesus went to a deserted place to pray.

Make a journey together

You will need: five road signs made from card for: synagogue; Simon’s house; outside Simon’s house; deserted place; next town.

  • Place the series of road signs around the room.
  • Stand together at the ‘synagogue’ and ask one child to act as Jesus and one act as Simon. As you begin to read the story, all move to ‘Simon’s house’ and read what happened there, as the two children act it out.
  • Continue to read and all move ‘outside Simon’s house’, as people arrive at Simon’s house. Ask ‘Jesus’ to go to the ‘deserted place’ and then ‘Simon’ to follow. Finally, all travel to the ‘next town’ as you read the end of the story.

Explore and respond

Use these ideas to help the children make connections between the Bible passage and their lives.

Create sketches to focus on Jesus’ priorities

  • Ask the children what a news report of this day in Jesus’ life would be like. Who would be interviewed? What would the questions be?
  • Divide the children into pairs and ask them to act out a scene from a news programme, with a reporter asking questions to someone who was there. When the children have created their scene, invite them to perform it to the rest of the group.

‘This is what I came to do’ placards

Make signs to show priorities

You will need: sheets of card, felt pens, garden stakes, tape.

  • Show the children some pictures of protest placards. Give everyone a sheet of card and ask them to write ‘This is what I came to do‘ across the card, leaving a space at the bottom.
  • Ask everyone to write or draw messages in the space on their card, to show priorities for change in the world, e.g. climate change, poverty, homelessness, and to decorate these. Once the placards are made, fix them to the stakes with tape.
