There will be NO Thursday Communion Service this week
A special moment for our church building
This week the internal scaffolding in the nave will come down and the glory of the newly repaired and cleaned stonework will be revealed.

Light will flood back into church through the beautifully restored leaded windows and we will know that this internal elevation of church is now safe from falling stonework and glass for many years to come.

It should  be a moment which we are celebrating with a big fanfare (after all this is one of the most ambitious projects St Mary's has undertaken for many, many years) but unfortunately that is not easy in light of Covid. However, it is a moment we should mark and I will do my best to make sure everyone can see videos and read about the this project.

The time and energy that has gone into creating the vision, fund raising (over £750,000), the skills of the stonemasons and designers not to mention the mountains of paperwork and sleepless nights!

This project is not complete - external repairs and the carvings of the wonderful Narnia grotesques is ongoing, as is work in the north nave.  But as this section of scaffolding comes down we will begin to see something of the extraordinary work that has taken place thanks to:
  • Matthias Garn and Kibby Shaffer and their stonemasons
  • Andy Burrell (our architect)
  • Richard Woolley (Quantity Surveyors)
  • James Stevenson (Structural Engineer)
and of our own team who were specially focused on the building repairs
  • Roland Deller
  • Pete Ashcroft
  • David Warren
as well as the project board and in particular Anne Mansfield who has done an incredible job looking after the finances.

For those unable to climb the stonework and to see firsthand the work that has taken please it is difficult to express the energy, skill and commitment that the team have exhibited. But I hope the following will give a flavour and help you appreciate how desperate the need for the repairs was and the amazing work which has been undertaken.

But remember .... this project is still ongoing.... external stonework repairs are still ongoing including work on new pinnacles and the Narnia Carvings.

So please keep your eyes open for more news and in particular keep your eyes on the Narnia exhibition as the characters will be changed over this Friday.

Please look out for Glenstorn (the Centaur from Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader), Maugrim (the wolf who is the head of the White Witches secret police - The Lion, Witch and Wardrobe) and Trufflehunter (the talking badger from Prince Caspian).
