Focus Scripture: Exodus 1
  • Read It Aloud - Let's put into practice being quick to listen. (James 1:19). God is speaking to us all the time and the primary way in which He speaks is through His written Word, i.e. the Bible. Read it aloud with reverence, understanding that you speak aloud the very words of God. (2 Timothy 3:16, AMP). You can also listen to it repeatedly. YouVersion and other Bible applications allow for you to listen to Word read aloud. Put it on repeat in your home or play it in your car. As you engage in repeated listenings you will become more familiar with the overall story and start to pick up on details that will become significant to hearing what God was saying to the original audience and desires to say to you.
  • Summarize It - After you've read or listened to it multiple times, sit down and try to summarize it. This is a good way to check to see that you are really understanding the literal history God tells in this chapter. Try to see if you can you answer the following questions. Where you find it hard, is probably a sign you will need to reread or reach out for help:
    • Who are the people in the history?
    • Where in the world are these people?
    • What are these people doing in the beginning?
      • How?
      • Why?
    • What are these people doing in the middle?
      • How?
      • Why?
    • What are these people doing at the end?
      • How?
      • Why?
  • Talk About It - Tell someone what you've learned from your repeated readings/listenings and summary. Share your questions with others who also TRUST and REVERE the Word of God. Discuss connections you may see between the history and life in your life, place and time today. Your brain takes notes of what you do repeatedly. Taken together-your reading, summarizing and talking Scripture-is a way to think deeply on God's Word or meditate. Talking about what you learn helps you to cement your learning-it's another way of hiding the word in your heart. (Psalm 119:11, AMP).
