tonight's pick-me-ups

Things we're doing to unwind and get cozy before bed tonight:

🍵 Buzzing with natural energy. You don't need coffee to get your daily boost. Natural alternatives to caffeine like chicory root, peppermint tea, and carob work as wonderful and healthier substitutes to your daily cup of joe.

🧣 Surviving the cold. Layering up for Winter isn't a new concept, but
these tips will have you and your style heating up the streets all chilly season long. Um, did someone say fashion fleece?!

📚 Cozying up with a good book. Add
Anna Wiener's Uncanny Valley: A Memoir to your reading list as a juicy tale of ambition, power, and wealth inside the start-up culture of Silicon Valley.

👁️ Faking it until we make it. These days a good night's sleep is as illusive as your dreams.
Grab must-have eye treatments like cool firming eye gels or pro-collagen eye masks for a well-rested complexion in 20 minutes or less.

Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:

 WELLNESS
For when you could be brunching it up everyday of the week ~ The lines between meal times are starting to blur, and a whole new set of eating habits are starting to emerge. Skipping breakfast and digging straight into an early lunch might be your ideal, albeit unconventional, routine. "You have the opportunity to ingest one of your favorite meals of the day (aka lunch) with renewed vigor and enthusiasm, not only because you’ll be hungrier and therefore equipped to eat more than you usually would for lunch, but also because you’ll have yet to hit the inevitable midday slump that occurs with regularity at around 1 p.m and riddles any concurrent meal with a sense of sluggishness. [And] you can get away with eating stuff like an egg sandwich on a bagel without feeling like you’re trespassing on Saturday’s territory."

CULTURE  For when you're not good at keeping secrets ~ The cat's out of the bag when it comes to the real life secret depicted in The Farewell. The autobiographical film starring Awkwafina has gotten some award buzz and some, well, awkward buzz. "The film ends with the revelation that Wang’s real-life grandmother, who was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in 2013, is still alive and still unaware of her diagnosis. But as Wang revealed at the Golden Globes Foreign Language Symposium, held at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre on Sunday, releasing a successful and critically acclaimed movie about her grandmother’s illness made it difficult to keep it a secret from her. And now, inevitably, the other shoe has dropped. Wang’s grandmother read a review of The Farewell that talked about the film’s autobiographical content, and has figured what is going on."

RELATIONSHIPS  For when you don't need to make everything a big deal  ~ Relationships are important (we get it) but there's no need to celebrate or take part in every milestone and benchmark you've ever heard of. "Every couple is obviously unique, which means that milestones can look very different from relationship to relationship. For some, introducing a new partner to their fam is a big step. For others, it's spending the holidays together for the first time. And very often, it's the little things that count — like having your first argument, your first sleepover, or peeing with the door open. (To each their own, am I right?) ... There is no milestone that's silly, insignificant, or unworthy or celebrating. But if these particular steps don't fit within your relationship priorities, then feel free to skip right over them."

SELF  For when you're sick of doing it all ~ Being busy has become sort of a state of being these days, but just because everyone's doing it doesn't mean you should be too. "The truth is, we’re a bunch of semi-happy workaholics who seem to thrive on jam-packed schedules, Google alarms, and side hustles, and we think that 'relaxing' means being the most intense weekend warrior ever ... By constantly 'doing more,' we can actually 'mute essential feelings of satisfaction and deplete the enjoyment gleaned from experiences.' That’s right: We’re doing all of this stuff to ultimately feel bad about ourselves and suck the living joy from our lives.

👌 THIS WEEK'S LIFE PRO TIP 👌
Teach yourself to not touch your face throughout the day. You'll get sick less, as hand to face/mouth contact is one of the most common routes for microbial transmission.
