bedtime stories

Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:

For when girls just wanna be liked ~ Sure, it's nice to be well-liked. However, when your perceived likability as a woman in the office starts contributing to your success at work, well, that's unlikable. "Researchers found that likability had no impact in same-gender male pairs, but when those men were paired with women, likability did play a role. Men contributed around the same amount when paired with other men, regardless of how 'likable' their partner was but tended to contribute more to pairings when they viewed the woman they were paired with as more likable. Thus, men were more cooperative with 'likable' women but equally cooperative with all men. The overall conclusion was that while women consider likability in interactions with both sexes, men only consider it when interacting with the opposite gender. This report calls attention to the bias, but that's not a call for women to work harder at being liked — we need to acknowledge the bias to move past this problematic trend."

BEAUTY  For when you know your type ~ Skin type that is. Knowing your skin's natural complexion can be tricky, especially when dry and dehydrated skin have so many similar symptoms. "Dehydrated skin lacks water, while dry skin lacks oil. That said, if you're experiencing some run-of-the-mill 'dryness' this Winter, you'll want to look for products that are hydrating rather than just moisturizing. On the other hand, locking in moisture and preventing fine lines as we age is key—and that's where oils and other occlusives come in. So the next time you note how 'dry' your skin is in the winter, you might want to take a closer look at your skin type and symptoms — your skin might just be, shall we say, thirsty."

TRENDING  For when almonds are out ~ Gone are the days of dairy milk and now almond is getting the boot too. Turn to oat, hazelnuts, and even soy for a more environmentally conscious options. "For environmentally minded consumers, the news is hard to swallow: almond milk is not healthy for the planet and the popular milk substitute is especially hard on bees. Both Emery and Specht emphasize that whether it’s coconut, soy or oat, consumers should drink whatever plant milk is most appealing to them and not fret over sustainability shortcomings, which are chump change compared with the environmental harms from dairy."

RELATIONSHIPS  For when gassing each other up should be the norm ~ It's hard to see a friend talking her/himself down when all you can see is a strong, beautiful, and caring person. Try to understand and react to your friend's negative self-talk in a more effective way. "As friends, we can be a part of that conversation. We may not be able to get to the very root of our friend’s negative self-image, but we can have a part in shaping the narrative around them. Petrozziello explains that when friends engage in negative self-talk in front of us, 'they could be asking us for help in their own way,' and 'by just being compassionate while protecting yourself at the same time, you could help someone.'"

  • Lower your left knee to the floor, and rest your hands on the ground under your shoulders.
  • Slowly lower your right knee to the right so you're resting on the outside of your right flexed foot.
