tonight's pick-me-ups

Things we're doing to unwind and get cozy before bed tonight: 

🌞 Beating the break out. Good news: waking up to surprise pimples can stop being a thing now. Your weather app (no, seriously) is the secret to knowing how to prep your face for the day.

🛋️ Turning the living room into a yoga studio. Yoga is a great stress reliever and workout, but memberships can get expensive (we know).
With a few simple props, you can enjoy your cat-cows in the comfort of your home.

🌵 Faking it 'til we make it. FYI you can still live that #plantmomlife without the green thumb. Spruce up your home
with lush fake (!!) plants that look just like the real ones and don't require as much attention.

💬 Tweeting it as we're feeling it. Seasonal depression is real and can hit hard this time around.

Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:

 CAREER  For when you have plenty of advice to give ~ Hold that thought because perhaps not everyone is asking for it. This is how to navigate when it feels tough be a good listener and offer help sometimes. "If you spend more time being curious about what real challenge is, you’ll likely find that it shifts, getting deeper and more specific. For example, if someone tells you that they have a hard time meeting deadlines when they work from home, many of us would jump in and offer tips such as waking up earlier or setting aside more time for a project. You might think the person is a prima donna, but when you dig deeper, you could find out the real challenge."

 CULTURE  For when Goop-ing real life is easier said than done ~ Glowing skin, yoga, and a calm mindset. Who doesn't want that? That said, Gwyenth Paltrow's lifestyle probably doesn't apply to normal people. "When Paltrow and Loehnen take the spotlight, we hear a lot about their diets and facial treatments, along with awkward banter that a few times too many is just Loehnen talking about how famous or beautiful or rich Paltrow is. Their discussions with experts don’t include treatment costs or accessibility options, or the larger societal forces that make us feel unwell and unsatisfied with the medical establishment, let alone the environmental or cultural effects of our wellness quests ... Self-care is an existential issue, but it’s a means, not an end, isn’t it? Once we’ve done the treatments and the therapy and the life-extending diets, what do we do with our stronger, healthier selves?"

 TRENDING  For when the saying goes never judge a book by its cover ~ There will always be time to learn how to talk to strangers or how data will change the world. For now, read more fiction and revive the nostalgia of getting lost in good story. "The thinning of print magazines this century has often meant a culling of fiction. There has sometimes been a vague sense that rapid technological change would push people toward nonfiction instead; that concrete facts might be valued over imaginative exploration and existential truth. We still need stories, and fiction specifically — storytelling is a defining characteristic that makes us human."

 WELLNESS  For when it's Wellness Wednesday, but make it every day ~ If meditation can make ourselves better and help others, shouldn't we all be doing it then? "Taken together, the literature on meditation suggested that the practice can help us get better at relating to one another. It confronted me with evidence that a few weeks of meditation can improve me as a person. I say 'confronted' because the evidence really did feel like a challenge, even a dare. If it takes such a small amount of time and effort to get better at regulating my emotions, paying attention to other people, seeing things from their point of view, and acting altruistically, ... well ... am I not morally obligated to do it?"

🥑 MIDNIGHT SNACK 🍟
Avocado fries. Basically your favorite late night craving, but make it healthy. Ingredients: avocados (obvs), bread crumbs, ranch, lime, olive oil, salt, pepper, and hot sauce (optional, but highly recommended). Time: 30 minutes tops to forget that potatoes ever existed.
