The new years celebrations were in full swing
But little did we know what the new year would bring
All around the world we would watch the news to see
This virus spreading quickly on its way to you and me
And soon our lives would be upside down as we were asked to stay inside
As the virus spread so quickly, in our homes we had to hide
In self isolation families stuck together
Inside their homes for what felt like forever
The nurses, the doctors, the full NHS
Were front line hero's and set their biggest test
Previously undervalued without full appreciation
They worked tirelessly with full dedication
The bin men, the postman and the delivery drivers too
Kept working through it all providing services to you
The schools all closed and it changed in an instant
But the teachers kept working hard providing parents with assistance.
The carers, the food banks and the volunteers were there
Helping the elderly and those in need, showing the world that they care
The police, the fire and the ambulance service
Were there protecting us so we felt safe and less nervous
The supermarkets were under strain as people over stocked
But they were filling shelves day and night until the doors were locked
There were people that surprised us and left us in awe
Of their kindness and strength seen never before.
I’m sad that I didn’t get to spend the whole year with you
To learn and have fun, showing you all I can do
But I’m grateful you were there helping me to thrive
With my weekly phone calls and work on Google drive
I have tried my best and been as good as I can
And loved spending time with my brothers, dad and mam
So these are the things I will always remember
Thank you so much and I will see you in September.
Love Toby Horner
