Owner of Strange Ways in downtown, Alex Dakoulas has been outfitting locals for more than 8 years, selling the unique patches, pins, gifts, and art from independent designers and artists. This month, we chatted with Alex about his business and the fabric of the New Haven retail scene.

Retail Background: “I used to design products for Converse and Puma, much of which was specialized product for retail outlets like Journey’s and Nordstrom. I also had my own graphic apparel line that was mostly sold online and at pop-up events.”

Style Influences: “The individual style and self-expression of others.”

Strange Ways’ Most Popular Item: “We specialize in pins and patches that can be applied to jackets, backpacks, and hats. Many of the artists we carry started creating them as an accessible means of getting their art to customers in a relatable way.”

The Future of New Haven’s Shopping Scene: “It’s growing; specifically the Ninth Square area on Orange and Chapel is bringing in a lot of fresh activity.”
