Sac State women’s golf team ranked as 17th seed in NCAA regional tournament

Sac State freshman Jennifer Koga practices putting at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex on March 17, 2020. Koga was +18 for the Big Sky Tournament but had a much-improved final round, shooting a 4-over 76 and helping the Hornets clinch the Big Sky Conference Championship. Deanna Sanchez
Sac State's women's golf team was assigned the 17th seed out of 18 going into the NCAA Division I tournament at Stanford. The team, which took home a big win for itself at the Big Sky Tournament in April, doesn't expect its low ranking to affect how it plays.

“We’re going to respect everyone on the field, but we don’t want to be afraid of anybody,” said women's golf coach David Sutherland. “From my perspective that’s the most important thing. There is no guarantee to who those six teams are that will get through this region, believe me.”

Despite an impressive showing in the first game of the series, the Sac State softball team ended its regular season with a 1-2 loss against Southern Utah. The inaugural game was a well earned 11-1 victory for the team, as it scored five runs and two home runs in the first. However, the second and third games of the series were narrowly taken by Southern Utah with final scores of 11-8 and 7-5, respectively.

The Hornets are now ranked third going into their next series against the Montana Grizzlies in the Big Sky Conference next weekend.

Find out how one player, Lewa Day came out of this losing weekend an all-time record winner.

Sac State's baseball team went toe-to-toe in a four game series against California Baptist last weekend, splitting the four-game series 2-2. The Hornets find themselves sitting tentatively at number three in the Western Athletic Conference rankings, though with four games left in the conference it doesn't seem that they will climb much higher.

Some individual players had an exceptional weekend, like sophomore pitcher Travis Adams who threw a complete game and only allowed one run over nine innings. Senior Matt Smith, who leads in the WAC rankings, raised his batting average to .388.

Best of Sac State 2021

The results are in! Our readers have named Arath Chavez and Matt Smith as the best male athletes at Sac State and Alondra Mejia as best female athlete.

Arath Chavez was a beloved and accomplished member of the men's soccer team who died unexpectedly in January. Chavez's kind and joyful spirit left behind an honorable legacy that lives on in the memory of his friends, family and teammates.

Senior outfielder Matt Smith has certainly made a name for himself at Sac State. On top of earning the Western Athletic Conference's title of "Hitter of the Week" twice in this season. Smith also became the all-time hits (262) and runs (153) leader for the baseball program.

Junior Alondra Mejia, first base for the Sac State softball team, was selected as female athlete of the year. During the 2021 season, Mejia made history when she hit the three home runs in a single game, an all-time record for the program. On top of that, Mejia's batting average of .311 is the second highest on her team, and she has the most put outs to her name for the season with a total of 201.
