Over 40 Years of Driving Diversity in Journalism
Dear Maynard Family,

We are thrilled to highlight one of the Maynard Institute's oldest running programs, Oakland Voices, in this newsletter. The Oakland Voices website design and masthead were recently refreshed to capture the history and spirit of our community journalism program, formed in 2010, by a partnership between the Oakland Tribune and the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education.

And don't miss our next virtual event on August 11th! As part of the Vision25 pay equity event series, the Institute will host a panel discussion featuring Alicia Bell and Diamond Hardiman of Media 2070. You can find the registration link below.

Stay positive. Test negative.

With gratitude,

Evelyn Hsu and Martin G. Reynolds

Join us for Part 2 of the Vision25 Pay Equity Series
Join us on Thursday, August 11, 12pm PT / 3pm ET for a panel discussion to explore newsroom challenges and strategies for pay equity.

Martin Reynolds, co-executive director of the Maynard Institute, will be joined by Alicia Bell and Diamond Hardiman of Media 2070, an organization that earlier this year exposed the daily struggle for fair wages through their documentary on Black journalist Elizabeth Montgomery, who struggled to “pay rent or buy groceries” on the salary she received working for a major U.S. newsroom.

This virtual event serves as a follow up to the recent Vision25 SRCCON session, “A Playbook of Pay Equity Comebacks: Scripts to use when people make excuses for not implementing pay transparency."

New Oakland Voices Design a Nod to Old Roots
Check out our updated Oakland Voices website design and masthead. To capture the history and spirit of our community journalism program we partnered with local, veteran aerosol artist Norman “Vogue” Chuck of the legendary Bay Area street art collective, the TDK crew.

The new Oakland Voices visual identity uses an old English font for the word “Oakland” in homage to The Oakland Tribune, where the community journalism training program first began in partnership with the Maynard Institute. The typography for "Voices" was inspired by iconic murals in East Oakland that read, "OAKLAND IS PROUD."

Momo Chang, Oakland Voices Co-Director, and Oakland Voices alum Kat Ferreira (Class of 2016-2017), wrote an article describing the inspiration and collaborative design process. Here's an excerpt:

"The choice of green as the primary color echoes the city’s green street signs, and more importantly, the iconic green patina of the Oakland Tribune Tower‘s bronze roof. Oakland Voices is over 10 years old and still thriving. The new design’s primary green color is both minty fresh and rooted in Oakland’s rich history. Just like oxidized bronze grows more beautiful with time and exposure, so does the Oakland Voices program."
