45 Years of Driving Diversity in Journalism
Dear Maynard Family,

As we prepare to gather in-person with Maynard 200 Fellows next month, we've been reflecting on how the Maynard Institute has provided training for journalists of color for over 45 years. Anyone who has been touched be our programs; trainees, mentors and teachers, are a part of our Maynard Family. These connections support each other in hardship and celebrate each others wins, so we're excited to share a non-exhaustive list of Maynard Family professional updates from the summer of 2022, which is linked below.

As much as we are excited by the progress of our alumni through the years, we are equally saddened with the loss of long time supporter of the institute and Maynard 200 faculty and mentor, Henry Fuhrmann. The decorated journalist was a staunch advocate of evolving media language to become more accurate and fair to the experiences of underserved communities. Read a tribute by the director of the Maynard 200 Fellowship, Odette Alcazaren-Keeley, below.

We are striving to continue the evolution of language and workplace equity in newsrooms across the United States through the Equity and Belonging Newsroom Transformation program. Two news organizations will receive 5 months of expert consultation to accelerate DEI efforts and improve coverage. Applications are due October 7. Learn more below.

Stay positive. Test negative.

With gratitude,

Evelyn Hsu and Martin G. Reynolds

Tribute to dearly departed member of the Maynard family, Henry Fuhrmann

We at the Maynard Institute were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Henry Fuhrmann’s sudden passing on September 14, 2022. Fuhrmann’s long-time support of the institute included being part of the faculty and serving as a mentor for the Maynard 200 Fellowship program. Read this tribute by Maynard 200 Program Director, Odette Alcazaren-Keeley.
