45 Years of Driving Diversity in Journalism

Dear Maynard Family,

The Maynard Institute turns 45 this year, and we wanted to take a moment to reflect on this milestone. In 1977, we were founded with a visionary mission: To promote diversity in the journalism industry through improved coverage, hiring, and business practices. Today, 45 years later, we are proud to report that we’ve kept that promise. But we also acknowledge that the work is not done.

Through it all, Maynard supporters like you have kept us going. That inspires us every day to keep training journalists and pushing newsrooms for a more diverse media industry. We are hosting a special reception at the #NABJNAHJ22 convention tonight to honor this moment. If you aren't at the convention, you can still join us in the fight by supporting our programs and donating today.

We'd also like to take a moment to congratulate both Irving Washington and Sisi Wei as they embark on their next journeys. In his eleven years at the Online News Association, Irving has left an indelible impact on the organization, significantly expanding ONA's programs. After two and a half years of outstanding leadership at OpenNews, Sisi is stepping down as co-executive director, and in a few weeks, she'll be joining The Markup as their editor-in-chief.

We've had the pleasure of collaborating with Irving and Sisi through our Vision25 partnership. Be sure to register for our next online Vision25 event in the Pay Equity Series coming up this Thursday, August 11th. The Vision25 Pay Equity Series culminates in-person at a special session at the ONA conference in SeptemberCheck out the details for both events below and register today!

Stay positive. Test negative.

With gratitude,

Evelyn Hsu and Martin G. Reynolds

Join us for Part 2 of the Vision25 Pay Equity Series
Join us on Thursday, August 11, 12pm PT / 3pm ET for a panel discussion to explore newsroom challenges and strategies for pay equity.

Martin Reynolds, co-executive director of the Maynard Institute, will be joined by Alicia Bell and Diamond Hardiman of Media 2070, an organization that earlier this year exposed the daily struggle for fair wages through their documentary on Black journalist Elizabeth Montgomery, who struggled to “pay rent or buy groceries” working for a major U.S. news organization.

By Drew Lindsay

"In the two years since the the racial reckoning that followed the police murder of George Floyd, America’s nonprofits frequently have promised to make their staffs look like America itself.
