Dear Maynard Family,

Wow! We want to thank you all our donors who have contributed to our end of year fundraising campaign thus far. Special thanks to Craig Newmark Philanthropies for their generous match gift. Now through December 31, your donation will be doubled! We can't reach our $50,000 goal without you — will you join us?

This week has seen the release of two new research reports that speak directly to why the work we do at the Maynard Institute is so important. AAJA has researched the Top 20 local TV news markets in the U.S. and confirmed shockingly low numbers of AAPI journalists compared to the the market demographics in those networks.

Plus, a new report commissioned by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation researched news media across the UK, Nigeria, India, South Africa, Kenya and the US and found women of all colors are systemically excluded from editorial and leadership roles. See links below for more details on both reports.

With gratitude,

Evelyn Hsu and Martin G. Reynolds

Local TV News Has a Problem, Reveals AAJA’s Exclusive Research
By Yi-Shen Loo
AAJA

"The Asian American Journalists Association’s Broadcast Snapshot Report is now available. AAJA analyzed the number of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) reporters, anchors, meteorologists and hosts in the top 20 TV markets. Nearly 25 percent of stations have no AAPIs on air and more than 70 percent have inadequate AAPI representation in on-air staff. The data is clear: there are not enough AAPIs on local television."

Post News, a Twitter alternative, gets funding from a16z
By Amanda Silberling
TechCrunch

"Post News is trying to capitalize on the “virtual watercooler for journalists” side of Twitter. The platform describes itself as a place to access “premium news content without subscriptions or ads.” News publishers and independent writers are encouraged to share their articles on Post News under a paywall. The idea is that this would allow users to pay for individual articles from a variety of news sources. It’s an alternative, or a supplement, to paying for individual subscriptions to specific news sources." Read more.
