Welcome back to school and to the Far North & CA Higher Education CalFresh Outreach Monthly Email. The purpose of this email is to provide CalFresh related information, upcoming webinars, and reminders.
Save the date for the CalFresh Outreach CHC Subcontractor Summit on March 5, 2019 in Sacramento. The Summit will convene the day before the statewide 2019 CalFresh Forum on March 6. Please keep in mind that many of you included this travel cost when developing your CFO Budgets. A calendar invite was sent to your campuses Project Director and Coordinator so please coordinate with them to determine who will represent your campus.

Friendly Reminder: The “Freshy” Award Nomination period is closing soon. Do you know an administrator, outreach leader, campus leader, grassroots mobilizer, or elected official that should be nominated? Anyone can submit a nomination and I encourage you to add your county and program to the list. Questions, please reach out to your CFO Program Manager.
AB 2178: This bill recently signed into law by Governor Brown and could affect food pantries on college campuses. The new rule will require some pantries to register with their local enforcement agency for a nominal fee. Pantries will be asked for basic information and depending on counties, occasional site inspections may take place. For more information, please click on the link. Tip sheet for campuses coming soon.

AB 1894: Post secondary education: student hunger: This bill passed in September 2018. The bill will authorize any qualifying food facility located on a campus of the California State University to participate in the CalFresh Restaurant Meal Program (RMP) even if the facility is located in a county that does not participate in the RMP. The CSUs are piloting this project and the opportunity is likely to expand to other colleges. The CSU Chancellor's office created a sheet that includes Tips for Establishing RMP at Your College
Government Shutdown and CalFresh Benefits

USDA Announces Plan to Protect SNAP Participants' Access to SNAP in February: The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture announced a plan to ensure that low-income Americans have access to the nutrition they need, despite the Government shutdown.

An All County Welfare Director was released in mid January regarding the Federal Shutdown and CalFresh: Plan for Early Issuance of February Benefits by January 20. It is important to note:
  • For ongoing recipients, benefits should have been issued already from the 16th – 20th of this month.
  • For those recertifying in the month of January, if they did not submit all verifications by the 15th of this month, once all verifications have been received, their benefits for February will issue on or after the 1st.
  • And for those who applied for aid after the 15th of January, benefits will issue on or after February 1st if there is still funding.
Please encourage students to apply for CalFresh now rather than waiting for the shutdown to end.
