Vol 41, December 2019

UMT has climbed 48 spots in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings: Asia 2020.

Its vice-chancellor said being ranked 243rd is a new record for the relatively new university in Malaysia. "In 2019, we were in the 291 - 300 range, so this shows significant improvement. We will continue to work on closing the gap with leading universities,” he added in a statement today.

He said it was achieved through research studies, strategic global partnerships, inbound and outbound student exchange, memoranda of understanding and international research.

He said some 118 research grants were received from local and overseas organisations totalling RM10.3 million for data gathering from Jan 1, 2019 - Oct 2019.

"Aside from this, holistic leadership is emphasised in students through organisation and involvement in invention and innovation competitions nationally and internationally,” he added.

He said the improved ranking will have a positive impact on the university and energize it to achieve a 150 - 200 range ranking in 2021.
“University graduates must be brave in defending their rights, have the correct stand and are open to fete any difference of opinion”

‘’To achieve this aspiration, the university is responsible for fostering the debate culture so that Malaysians will know the best way to argue to uphold accurate facts for the sake of the dignity of the race and country”

‘’This is because we want a young generation who are brave in defending their stand, dare to defend the rights of the down-trodden who are incapable of speaking up for themselves and dare to compete in a healthy manner to maintain national peace, not contesting to destroy what had been built all these while,’’

UMT’s Journal of Sustainability Science and Management (JSSM) has been accorded Crème Potential 2019 award by the Ministry of Education (MOE). JSSM current editorin-chief Prof. Dr Mhd Ikhwanuddin Abdullah accepted the award during 2019 the Malaysia’s Research Star Award and Jurnal Crème Recognition on 5 November. A total of 27 Malaysian journals received Jurnal Crème Recognition 2019 for excellent performance at the international level. Four journals received the awards for the category High-performance Journals Indexed in Web of Science (WoS), 17 for the category High-performance Journals Indexed in SCOPUS, and six for the category Crème Potential. The Ministry of Education has presented Jurnal Crème awards since 2015 to recognize locally published academic journals that have achieved excellent performance. These journals have met the criteria set by the Malaysian Citation Centre, through its partnerships with two popular indexing agencies, Clarivate Analytics and Elsevier Science.

Professor Mhd Ikhwanuddin said that the recognition given to JSSM despite its young age may be attributed to UMT’s continuous efforts in producing high quality journal and using successful strategies to increase the journal’s visibility at the global level. The next target for JSSM is to obtain the Web of Science (Main Collection) recognition next year for Core Collection. Another target is to have the journal included in the Potential Science Citation Index for this year and in Full Citation next year. JSSM is an open-access and peer-reviewed journal that publishes scientific articles related to sustainable science, including the interaction between natural sciences, social science, technologies and management for sustainable development and wise use of resources. The journal is indexed in the Web of Science (Zoological Record), SCOPUS, MyCite, Google Scholar, Chemical Abstract, ASEAN Citation Index, and SCImago. JSSM Editorial Board members include scholars from University of Canberra, Australia, Louisiana University, United States of America, Sun Yat-Sen University, China, Queensland University of Technology, Australia, and Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, France.

Sultanah Nur Zahirah Library (PSNZ) of UMT and Sultan Sulaiman Primary School (II) Resource Centre had recently approached students on Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) through hands-on activity.

The program aims to encourage students to express their creativity as well as educate them on technical activities. The program started with a brief ceremony of handing over mechanical equipment to the school by UMT Chief Librarian, Tuan Haji Abu Hassan Ghazali.  A demonstration of equipment installation involving 5 practical trainers and 30 students was conducted. The students installed the equipment based on the guidance by the trainers, and they made sure the equipment functioned well.

The program is in line with the mission of the university to support knowledge transfer activities and empower STEM education. PSNZ also sees this as an opportunity to diversify student learning experience as well as enhance the role of the School Resource Center as a creativity one stop centre. Sultan Sulaiman Primary School (II) is the first primary school in Kuala Terengganu to have a STEM corner for a makerspace within the School Resource Center, and its potential will be expanded in the future.

Efforts to form a collaboration between Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and Universitas Padjajaran (UNPAD) Indonesia came to light during an unofficial visit by Institute Tropical Biodiversity staff to UNPAD in March 2018. The collaborative effort  was started with the 'Workshop for International Publishing' which was successfully conducted at UNPAD by Professor Dato’ Dr Mohd Tajuddin Abdullah, Director of the Institute for Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainable Development (Bio-D Tropika), who was invited to share his expertise in publishing  indexed manuscripts.

UMT’s visit to UNPAD this time (October 10, 2019) was to submit the MoU document to UNPAD and proceed with a discussion on subject matters to further strengthen the previously agreed collaborative activities. The UNPAD team was represented by M. Aqshel Revinzky (International Department), Dr. Sri Djatnika Syaidiah and Dr. Sutisna from the Faculty of Economics and Business, while Associate Professor Dr. Khatijah Omar and Dr. Muhammad Abi Sofian Abdul Halim, from Institute Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainable Development representing UMT.

Several proposals have been discussed following the submission of the MoU document such as collaborative research and indexed publications either with or without funds, the organization of joint international seminars and conferences, staff and student exchange, as well as collaboration and cooperation in teaching and learning methodologies and activities. The upcoming joint forum to be held is “International Forum on Entrepreneurship” which is expected to be realised in September 2020. This joint forum will be co-hosted by UMT, UNPAD and TELKOM University.

The visit of the UMT delegation to UNPAD this time widens the opportunities for collaborative efforts between the two universities. It is hoped that more collaborative activities can be realized to empower academic programs, students, lecturers, research and publication, learning and teaching activities as well as to increase UMT visibility abroad.
