2000 UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM VARIES DISCIPLINES AT UMT SHOWCASE THEIR INCREDIBLE FUTURE COMMERCIALIZATION PRODUCTS

UMT Undergraduate Research Day 2018 or URG 2018 was organized as a platform for final year undergraduate students at UMT to present the results of their final year research projects.  The students are currently undergoing 27 academic programmes at UMT. During the two day programme, nearly 2000 students, 500 assessors consisting of lectures and industry partners, participated in this event.  The students exhibited their research projects using poster presentations.   The posters exhibit various fields of study, such as computer science, informatics and applied mathematics, marine and environmental science, fishery and aquaculture sciences, food science and technology, accounting, management, marine engineering, counselling, social studies and economics.

64 private and government agencies, including industries such as marine, maritime, aquaculture, tourism and others, were involved as assessors during the poster presentation, which has been part of the research project's grading.

The poster presentation created opportunities for the students to highlight their research projects and findings to the industries. Innovative features were also highlighted and these can definitely be commercialized. Also, this programme helped students, lecturers and supervisors get feedbacks directly from people in the industry in line with industry requirements. This can make the academic programmes offered and research conducted very relevant to the needs of the industry, thus contributing to high marketability among the students.  This programme also would improve student maturity, ethics and professionalism in managing the research project.
Eight best posters were selected, one for each of the eight schools in UMT.  The winners were Mohamad Azrul Shafiq bin Sulaiman (Development of a Real Time Energy Data Logger Using Raspberry pi for Monitoring the Building’s Energy Consumption), Sharmili a/p Silvarajoo (Synthesis and Conductivity Properties of Thiosemicarbazide Derivatives Containing Pyridine Ring and Their Transition Metal Complexes), Miza Nursyazwin binti Shuamai (The Fishermen Income Based on Fishing Gear Used In Marang), Tan Jia Theng (A Linear Programming Model in Prawn Feed Formulation and Its Effectiveness for Macrobrachium Rosenbergii in Malaysia), Hiew Chee Nam (Hydrothermal Emergence Model for Herbicide-Resistant Biotype of Goosegrass (Eleusine indica), Mohamad Zahid bin Baharom (Evaluation of Sediment Toxicity from Tumpat Lagoon on the Survival of Chironomus Kiiensis), Asha a/p Sivalingam (Impact of Creative Destruction on Natural Disasters in Development and Developing Countries), and Nur Hazwani binti Karim (Factors of Warehousing Productivity Assessment on Logistic Service Sector).  Finally, the champion out of all the winners was Mohamad Zahid bin Baharom.

Indeed, UMT Undergraduate Research Day 2018 or URG 2018 had provided the best platform in helping the students to highlight their research projects and findings, as well as improving levels of confidence, communication skills, creativity and innovation, therefore promoting a competitive generation in line with the government's aspiration to increase the university's credibility.
