Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, certain that God is appealing through us. We plead on Christ's behalf, "Be reconciled to God." He made the One who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
-2 Corinthians 5:20-21

A year of growth teaches players biblical truths

As a new team with new players, the 9Us experienced a lot of firsts this summer and saw a lot of growth. They also faced adversity. As they identified areas that they needed to improve, they made Romans 15:13 their theme verse for the year.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Coach Kevin Sjuts explained, “baseball shouldn’t dictate our mood.” When they would become discouraged, he said, “this verse helped remind them that our joy comes from the Lord.” At the beginning of the year, they struck out more than a dozen times in a single game. But they continued to progress, and Coach Sjuts said, “we peaked at the right time."
They made it all the way to the state championship to play the Riverdogs.  It was an exciting game with four lead changes. ABA had a one-run lead in the fifth and final inning.  They needed one out to seal the game. The Riverdogs had two runners on base.  ABA was out of pitchers, and so they turned to their catcher. He had been catching all day, but he stepped up to the mound and finished the game. It was a sweet ending to a season filled with wonderful memories, moments of joy, and a great deal of growth.

Basketball Camp

This past week kids came to ABA Basketball Camp and focused on four attributes of Christ. They learned about Christ like attitude, effort, humility and courage.

Christ-like Attitude
Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky
Philippians 2:14-15
Christ-like Effort
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,
Colossians 3:23
Christ-like Humility
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
Philippians 2:3-4
Christ-like Courage
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

The Goal of Christian Athletes

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. -Romans 12:2
Coach's Corner with Gary Nunnally
At our basketball skills the last couple of weeks, we have focused on Romans 12:2 and the ultimate goal of all Christian athletes and coaches: To be transformed, becoming more like Christ through sports. We emphasized that none of us are perfect (that is why we need a savior!), but how we do sports is an important part of our Christian walk.
