Turning the Dial

Governor Walz recently addressed the state to announce that he would not be extending the stay at home order that was set to expire on May 18th. He is working to slowly open up more of the state and begin lifting restrictions, which will allow our communities to move closer to returning to normal life. While we are excited for the opportunities this will afford local businesses and our fellow community members, HCO’s process to take steps to return to normal will look a little different.
Home and Community Options is required to follow the guidelines of the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), as well as the Department of Human Services (DHS), and because of this, the steps we must take to loosen our restrictions will be a much slower process than for other businesses you may see in the community. The people we are supporting are some of our community’s most vulnerable individuals, and we must take extra care to make sure that there are established safety plans in place to protect those we serve and our staff to the best of our ability.

Like the rest of the community, we are also eager to return to some semblance of normal. We know the process to loosen the restrictions we have had to put in place due to COVID-19 will be slow moving. While we will strive to move towards these goals as expediently as we can, our top priority continues to be the health and safety of those we serve and our staff.

HCO Receives Testing Opportunity for COVID-19

As a service provider with congregate care sites, Home and Community Options was recently given the ability to receive COVID-19 testing for our residential individuals and all current staff.

Though we do not currently have any positive cases in our residential sites, we are encouraging participation of all qualifying consumers and staff. While testing for active COVID-19 infection only provides us with a snapshot of a specific point in time, we are appreciative for the opportunity to better assess the current state of our staff and individual's health for the present moment.

Staff Spotlight: Ashly Bissen

For Ashly Bissen, the job of Communication Coordinator for Home and Community Options has undertaken a number of changes in the wake of COVID-19. What was once a role geared towards marketing, promotion, artistic design, and fundraising has shifted from a primarily external focus to an internal one.

Ashly is working closely with Executive Director, Suzanne Horstman, and HCO’s Management Team as they develop new plans and implement best practices based on directives from the CDC, Minnesota Department of Health...    Read More

Local Community Comes Together

A huge THANK YOU to the countless talented and generous community members who have sewed, knitted, and donated cloth face masks and ear relievers for our program staff and those we serve. It is truly inspiring to watch neighbors come together to help each other in times of need. Thank you to all those who volunteered their time, donated materials, and shared their resources to support us!

Interning During COVID-19

Kennedy Jilot recently finished a Therapeutic Recreation practicum with HCO. For the first part of the semester she spent one-on-one time in the programs helping individuals to plan recreation activities that they had an interest in. Once COVID-19 hit, she transitioned to completing weekly zoom calls with individuals in the programs and assisting with daily activity planning to ensure that every day there were fun and engaging opportunities for everyone at home. Thank you Kennedy for making an impact in the lives of those we serve at HCO!
