DIRECTOR'S REPORT

A Note From Meg Lokey, Executive Director of The Payton Wright Foundation

For many, October is an exciting time filled with laughing children dressing up for Halloween and dreaming of what types of candy they will soon get. Parents are making sure their costumes fit and finalizing their plan for the big night. For some, October hasn’t been such a fun month. Instead of spending Halloween trick or treating, they are spending it with their child in the hospital.

Take, for instance, our dear PWF child Jewel. I got the call on my daughter’s 5th birthday about a mom of a 5-year-old who was about to be evicted. Her daughter, Jewel, had just turned 5 and had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. Her single mother had been in the hospital with her for 6 weeks while they tried to figure out how to treat this tumor, unable to work to pay her bills.

This call hit so close to home. I could not imagine being torn between being with my sweet 5-year-old in the hospital and having to leave her to go to work. Fortunately, we were able to help Jewel’s mom. We stopped her from being evicted, stopped her car from being repossessed, got her electricity paid, her insurance paid as well as many more bills. In fact, we have paid about 11 bills for them totaling almost $6,000.

Leaving your sick child alone in the hospital or going back to work so you can pay your bills should not be a choice a mother has to make. We are able to help families like Jewel’s every single day. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we have already helped pay over 200 bills this year.

I cannot thank the donors, volunteers, event sponsors & attendees, and the people who like and share our page on social media enough for helping us accomplish such a wonderful mission month after month. The families we support’s needs have grown significantly this year. We are helping each family even more than we ever have before, and this could not be done without you.

As you celebrate the children dressing up for Halloween this year that bask in the glory of their candy treasures, remember those who might be celebrating their last with their child. We are here to help these parents spend every moment with their child, thanks to you!
Sincerely,

Meg Lokey

PWF CHILD SPOTLIGHT
Chloe, Age 1

Chloe was is one of the most adorable patients we have helped. At a year old she was diagnosed with anaplastic ependymoma.  She has been in the hospital for over 3 months, which has really financially stressed the family. Since her hospitalization she has been treated for 2 cases of meningitis, swelling and then finally was able to resume her radiation therapy. She spent a lot of time in the ICU. Her dad was on unpaid leave from his job at a pharmacy warehouse and her mom works teaching English online to children in China. We just got a bit of good news that Chloe was transferred to our inpatient rehab so we are hoping for no more hospitalizations anymore.

PWF has helped this family with over 14 of their home and household bills so that they could spend the time they had with their sweet little one who needed them at the hospital.

THANK YOU!

Our 3rd annual Palette event was our most successful to date. Thanks to the amazing sponsors, artists, auction contributors, restaurants, patrons and donors, we were able to raise enough to support 18 additional families this year! Cheers to those who made that possible!

The Payton Wright Foundation is 100% community funded to help families whose children have pediatric brain or spinal cord cancer. We work with hospital social workers to find families that are struggling financially because caring for a child with cancer often requires a leave from work. We pay these family's bills, like rent, utility bills, car payments, so that they can spend their time focusing on their child. If you would like to help us with this mission please donate now!
