Carers Leeds Young Adult Carers
Newsletter August 2020

Welcome to our August newsletter

I hope you’ll all well and keeping safe.

The Young Adult Carer project has finally settled into its new way of working and have been busy delivering its 1:1 support and zoom sessions via telephone  and virtually.

Over the last few months we have had some guest speakers join our zoom sessions. We've had Jo come in and deliver a great session on 'Self Care' and gave us some top tips on how we can look after ourselves better. We also had Ministry of Food deliver a cooking class via zoom where we cooked a healthy pasta sauce dish. Yummy!

Starting the week commencing the 10th August, Grace and Kai will be begin to implement the new changes to the Young Adult Carers service. Existing carers who receive 1:1 support and new referrals will be informed of these changes individually.

Sadly in September we will be saying goodbye to Kai and welcoming in our NEW permanent worker for the YAC project. More information to follow in the next newsletter.

Well done to everyone at college and University who have finished their coursework and exams. It's finally done, you can now relax and enjoy the summer. Good Luck to everyone on Results Day this month!

Goodbye from Kai

For those who don’t know, I’ve been covering the YAC project for the last six months whilst we waited for Farrah to join us ( a little later than expected due to lockdown). For everyone I have been working with 1:1 I will be handing over to Farrah who will do the remainder of your six sessions. It’s been amazing working for the project and I’ll really miss it.

My favourite part of working with the YAC team:

Getting to know so many brilliant people, and the biweekly zoom groups- this helped keep me sane whilst working from home!

My least favourite part of working with the YAC team:

I’m now addicted to Tiktok after being persuaded to download it. I’ve never been so unproductive.

In the 2018 Carers UK State of Caring survey, 72% of carers in the UK said they had suffered ill health as a result of caring. To improve carer health in Leeds, we’re hosting this series of online wellbeing sessions.

In this session, our carers good health worker Jo Foster will talk to carers about getting organised.

These 30 minute info sessions have been designed to focus on some of the common issues faced by carers. We will provide an overview of the issue along with top tips and techniques for you to try and improve your health. Other session topics include:

  • Resilience and “bouncing back”
  • Communication skills and getting what you want
  • Solving problems
  • Assertiveness, boundaries and saying no
  • Living with worry
This event is accessed over the internet via Zoom. To take part you will need access to the internet plus a computer, smart phone or tablet.

No experience needed. To book a place please contact Jo Foster, our carers good health worker on and Jo will send you the zoom joining link.

If you are interested in a session but there isn’t a time or date to suit you, or you don’t have access to Zoom, contact Jo who will work with you to find a way to share the information with you.

The sessions are very relaxed and you can just sit and watch. Participation is minimal and not compulsory, so you are welcome to attend and just watch and listen.

Why not devote a small part of your day to your own wellbeing, get a cuppa and join Jo.  80% of carers surveyed after the last round of sessions said they were “extremely likely” to attend another session.

24 Hour Mental Health Helpline - New Serivce

A new 24 hour mental health helpline is now available for residents in Leeds and neighbouring areas (Calderdale, Kirklees, Wakefield and Barnsley).

The helpline provides confidential support, advice, information and guidance for anyone concerned about their mental health. Trained telephone advisors will provide support for people in distress who need someone to talk to, and also refer people to services for further help. Carers, or those concerned about a loved one or friend, will also be able to telephone for advice.

Anyone registered with a Leeds GP can call the helpline on 0800 183 0558.
