From the Directors

Body Safety curriculum is in full swing at The Parkside School. The Social Work Department facilitates discussions with every class each spring about ways that children can learn to identify and communicate in the event they find themselves in a compromising situation. Each class focuses on developmentally appropriate topics ranging from,  "Who is a stranger?” to, “What is and is not an okay touch?" The team stresses,  "Who can you trust?" and, "Who can you tell?" to teach children the importance of talking to familiar, trusted adults about any situation that makes them feel uncomfortable or unsafe. Along with the experts, we also believe in the importance of teaching children to label and use accurate names for their body parts as well as to deepen their understanding around issues related to privacy.

We urge parents to follow up with these discussions at home  to reinforce learning and to help children build skills and a sense of trust and safety when communicating with trusted adults about important and sensitive questions and concerns. A home-school connection to reinforce learning about these issues is essential, as numerous studies have shown.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Our Annual Fund Goal, and the Impact on Parkside’s Endowment

Each year at this time, there is a concentrated focus to secure as many donations to the Annual Fund as possible. The importance of these unrestricted donations has increased in recent years, as our operating deficit has grown by more than $328,000 since 2016, whilst donations to the Annual Fund have decreased in the same period of time.

Your generous contributions to the Annual Fund ensure that we are able to balance Parkside’s operating budget without drawing from our school’s modest endowment. If we are unable to reach our goal of $750,000 by June 30, the Board would likely be forced to draw from our endowment for the second year in a row – a practice that jeopardizes our long term financial viability by tapping into Parkside’s investments.

Meant to safeguard Parkside’s future, our endowment is less than 10% of that of the average New York City Independent School. By supporting the Annual Fund as generously as you can, your gift helps to balance the budget for the current school year, but it also has a greater impact. It allows our endowment funds to remain untouched and to grow, laying the foundation for an even brighter future for Parkside. Thank you for giving as generously as you can to the Annual Fund.

Baby Chicks at Parkside

During the past few weeks Room 3-4 studied a unit on egg to chick. They candled the eggs and prepared for the arrival of the little chicks. They put shavings, food, water, and heat lamps in their cage. They also thought of names for the chicks including:  Marshmallow, King, Sun, Moon, August, Star, Lulu, Eggy, and Pete!  When the chicks hatched, they observed them and recorded their observations. Students did a wonderful job noticing what the chicks were doing and using words to describe what they looked like! Just before the chicks were returned to the farm to continue their growth, Room 3-4 celebrated all they had learned about chickens with with a party!

Library Notice

With the end of this year drawing near we want to retrieve our circulating Library books. With this in mind, the children will not be borrowing books for the remainder of this year.

Kindly return any outstanding Library books.

Thank you very much.
