From the Directors

Adapting a Broadway production for the children in 4-3, 4-4, 5-4, and 5-2 is no easy feat. Melissa Ferraro and MingYi Lin’s outstanding talent, dedication, and tremendous amount of work were highlighted during this year’s production of Les Miserables. We couldn’t be more impressed or appreciative. The scenery, created by the students under the direction of Cari Casas transported us to Paris during the 1800’s June rebellion. Through their continued practice of lines and songs, the students outdid themselves.  If you were able to attend one of the performances you know how inspiring our young actors and actresses were. Those in the audience were moved to tears and laughter throughout, and came away so impressed with the bravery and talent that they witnessed from the children.
Preparation for these events inevitably causes some disruptions and changes in students’ schedules and routines. The Parkside team does its best to prepare the students for these “zoopy” times and assist with the management of anxiety and flexibility.
Research reveals that drama has a positive impact on students’ physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development, and we know that it also promotes confidence, empathy, self-discipline, patience, and cooperation. Learning how to deal with the cutting of a song or line, the disappointment of a role that goes to another, and accepting less than perfect outcomes are critical to the outcome of the play. At times, some students will say, “It’s too much!” But the next day they are back on stage singing and dancing away.
A special thank you goes to Roberta Favant for her professional expertise designing and creating costumes, to Michael Tramontana for his outstanding leadership of the specialty team during a period of intense fluctuations in schedules and coverage, Marie Rice for her invaluable prop support, to the upper school teachers, and to the entire Parkside staff for their flexibility and patience during these past weeks.  Thank you also to everyone else who contributed props and costumes to support the event. We are extremely proud of our performers and commend them for all the hard work, persistence, and care they have shown each other working towards such a rigorous, yet rewarding, outcome.

Growth Beyond Measure

“Contributing to the Annual Fund each year is one way I give back to Parkside for everything they do for my son William. The change and growth I see in William from his first year at Parkside until now as he finishes his fourth year is beyond measure and fills my heart with so much happiness and immense gratitude. Parkside gives him confidence, courage, and the tools to be the best he can be. Giving to Parkside makes a true difference.”

There is just one week left of school. If you have not yet made your Annual Fund gift or set up pledge payments, please GIVE ONLINE or contact Anthony Kapp to discuss how you can help us reach our goal.
