Good Morning Neighbors,

I hope everyone enjoys this beautiful, fall weekend - I'm sure the colder weather and snow are right around the corner. Check out the newsletter for some fun Halloween events happening over the weekend. There are masquerade parties, family friendly events like our candy crawl, and of course, don't forget to get your scare on while supporting a charitable cause at Dead on Damen!

Some things to note for the week ahead, we have our Budget Town Hall this Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 6pm via zoom. Please join to hear my updates on the proposed budget and to discuss priorities going into the vote on Nov. 7. Read for more info below and don't forget to complete our community budget survey as well.

Reverend Marilyn Pagan Banks Celebrates
20 Years with A Just Harvest

On Wednesday, Reverend Dr. Marilyn Pagán-Banks was honored for her 20th anniversary as Executive Director of A Just Harvest. Rev. Marilyn has been a tireless leader of our community, working to fight hunger in the north of Howard area by providing a hot meal every day. She even adapted those services throughout the COVID pandemic, so no one had to go without a meal.

Rev. Marilyn's impact extends beyond feeding our neighbors; she establishes deep and long-lasting relationships, helping build community in a part of our ward that has seen disinvestment historically. She works to connect members of our community to resources and employment opportunities, all while fighting for social justice. Marilyn's exemplary leadership has paved the way for others to succeed, and her commitment to bettering our neighborhood through her work at A Just Harvest is invaluable.

Congratulations to Marilyn on her 20th anniversary with A Just Harvest, and thank you for all you have done for our community. 
ISKCON Temple Celebrated Diwali this Week!
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), popularly known as the Hare Krishna Temple, celebrated the Govardhan Puja & Diwali this past Tuesday, October 25th with pomp and joy. Hundreds of devotees from various backgrounds, nationalities, race, and religions celebrated in unity this annual festival of lights.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi from Illinois' 8th congressional district was kind enough to grace the occasion and spoke during the festival. "The Universe is our family - we treat everybody with honor, dignity, respect, and equality, and we treat everyone as we want to be treated ourselves."

The Hare Krsna Temple has been serving the Rogers Park community for the past 50 years at 1716 W. Lunt in the 49th Ward. 
Caleb DeBerry Voted as Board Vice President for A Just Harvest
Caleb DeBerry was recently voted on to serve as the Board Vice President for A Just Harvest. Caleb is a Rogers Park native and former 49th Ward intern who is pursuing a degree in political science and sociology at Howard University. 

Before joining the board, Caleb serves as the Executive Director for Vote16 Illinois, an organization that advocates for lowering the voting age for municipal elections. He also worked with the High School Democrats of America, serving as the Political Director for the Progressive Association that connected students with local campaigns. Caleb hopes to facilitate more youth engagement in the Rogers Park community in this role.

Please take a moment to congratulate Caleb on this incredible accomplishment!

Ward Updates
Housing For All, LLC Unveils Proposal to Build Mixed-Use Workforce Housing Development at Howard and Paulina
Preliminary conceptual design
Housing for All, LLC is proposing to develop a mixed-use workforce housing development at the corner of Howard and Paulina in the 49th Ward. The project will comprise two lots at that intersection, spanning 7603-7619 N. Paulina and 1646-1660 W. Howard.

While the underlying zoning at both sites (B1-3) will remain the same, the size of the lot will trigger a Planned Development process. A PD is a stricter process than a zoning change and requires that the developer submit a comprehensive plan to the City of Chicago for approval. A PD also allows the community more input into the overall design of the development. 

Work will be completed in two phases, with the lot at the corner of Howard and Paulina happening in the first phase and work further north on Paulina in the Werner Bros building taking place in the second phase. Once completed, the building will be a total of 6 stories, with 110 residential units above ground floor commercial space. 

The 110 residential units will be 100% affordable workforce housing units. The unit breakdown will be as follows:
  • Studios - 16 units
  • 1 bedroom - 24 units
  • 2 bedrooms - 42 units
  • 3 bedrooms - 28 units
88 of the 110 units would be set aside for households earning at or below 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI), and the remaining 22 would be set aside for households earning at or below 30% AMI. 10% of the units would be set aside as type A fully accessible units, with another 20% set aside as easily adaptable to fully accessible. 

There will be a total of 14,968 square feet of rentable retail space upon completion of the project. The developer will work closely with the existing businesses so as not to displace them, including the post office on Paulina. They will also explore new market tax credits, which could help them pass cost savings to potential commercial tenants to keep prices affordable and encourage economic development in the area. 

The site's proximity to an accessible Red Line station makes it an ideal location for more density. The addition of affordable family-sized units will help bolster Gale Community Academy's enrollment numbers. Finally, the workforce housing component will help provide tenants with the tools and skills to be successful in the workforce. 

The developer submitted an application to the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) for an assessment for tax credits. If approved, the application would then go before IHDA's board in June for a final determination. The developer would also seek supplemental financing options from the City of Chicago's Department of Housing.

The proposal is still in the early stages of planning. As the application progresses through IHDA, there will be ample opportunity for the community to learn more and share their feedback. A copy of Housing for All, LLC's proposal is available by clicking here

Last month, Mayor Lightfoot unveiled her budget proposal for the 2023 fiscal year. Now, we want to hear your thoughts on the budget proposal! Please take a moment to complete the online 49th Ward budget survey to help us identify the priorities of 49th Ward residents. Your responses will help inform Alderwoman Hadden as we enter discussions for next year's budget.

Our office will share the results of this survey during a Budget Town Hall on Wednesday, November 2, at 6 pm (please note that this will replace the regularly scheduled Town Hall for November). The budget survey will close on Sunday, October 30.

Help Newly Arrived Migrants By Purchasing Wish List Items
Thank you to all our neighbors who have donated items to help the newly arrived migrants settle in. We have had an outpouring of support and generosity from our neighbors in the 49th Ward, resulting in several truckloads delivered to the City's sorting center.

The City is now shifting its donation process and will no longer accept donated items through ward offices. Instead, they are partnering with the Instituto del Progreso Latino to create an Amazon Wishlist to facilitate and expedite the donations of new items. 

This means that our office will no longer accept items, as the sorting center will no longer be able to take them. Instead, our neighbors who would like to donate to the newly arrived migrants can purchase items from the Amazon Wishlist. For more information and to view the Wishlist, click here.  
Trilogy Shares Data on Alternative Crisis Team
Trilogy Behavioral Health shared data from the 1,181 calls to its hotline from July through September. Since the beginning of 2022, Trilogy's First-response Alternative Crisis Team (FACT) has provided mobile response and intervention to people experiencing mental health crises. In September, Trilogy scaled up its services to respond to these crises 24/7 in real-time. Trilogy works with its callers after the response by following up and connecting them to a variety of resources.

Field Community Mosiac Project Needs Your Help!
Eugene Field Elementary, 7019 N. Ashland, is installing a mosaic at its front entrance, and they need your help! Help bring the mosaic to life by attending a workshop that will help contribute to the mosaic tiling and installation. Your participation will provide an opportunity to create Eugene Field's first mosaic!

The workshops will be held on Wednesdays beginning November 2 through December 14 from 4-5 pm in room 212 at the school. No registration is required, just swing by and help our local school bring this project to fruition! 
Culture of Safety Grand Opening November 12

The Culture of Safety Dojo & Wellness Center is open for business, offering Jin Sei Ryu Karate-DoEmpowerment-based Self-Defense, and (Coming Soon!) Shiatsu bodywork and massage. Our beautiful and spacious Center is located at 6961 N Clark St (between Morse and Lunt).  And we’re having a party to celebrate! 

Grand Opening Saturday, November 12th.

Come and enjoy some of the students demonstrating their karate, participate in an Empowerment Self-Defense mini-class, and see a demonstration of Zen Shiatsu while enjoying light refreshments.  All attendees of the Grand Opening will be entered into a raffle for Shiatsu and Karate gift certificates.  Additional tickets may be purchased for a nominal fee.

Infrastructure Updates
Sullivan High School Elevator Installation:

As crews began to peel away the exterior of the existing school to install a new elevator , they found issues with the existing structure. They are working to correct those issues, with the remainder of the work happening over the next three weeks. Once the corrections are made, they can continue to install the new steel structure and eventually enclose it. They are on track to have the elevator installation completed in early 2023. 

Sewer Main Replacement Project (PN7439):

Crews are awaiting approval from the Office of Underground Coordination. Once they receive that approval, permits will be issued for the sewer main replacement. This has caused the start date of the project to be pushed back slightly.

Information on the 2022 General Election
The November 8 General Election is just around the corner. This year, the Board of Elections has consolidated polling places, so please check its website for your voting location

Voting early is easier than ever either at an early voting location or by mail for those looking to vote ahead of Election Day. Below are the resources to help you participate in the democratic process this fall. 
Early Voting Starts October 7
Early voting for the General Election kicks off on October 7 in Chicago. Voters looking to cast their ballot early may do so at the following Chicago Board of Elections Supersites from October 7 through November 8:

191 N. Clark
69 W. Washington, 6th Floor

Supersite Hours:

October 7 through October 30:
Mondays through Fridays from 9 am to 6 pm
Saturdays from 9 am to 5 pm
Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm

October 31 through November 7:
Mondays-Fridays from 9 am to 7 pm
Saturdays from 9 am to 5 pm
Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm

November 8 (Election Day):
191 N. Clark will be open from 6 am to 7 pm
69 W. Washington, 6th Floor will not be open for voting on Election Day
Early Voting Begins October 24 in All 50 Wards
Early voting for the 2022 General Election begins on Monday, October 24, in all 50 wards. Chicago voters may vote at any Early Voting location through November 8. 

Any voter who needs to register to vote for the first time or file an address update or name change must show two forms of ID, one of which reflects the voter's current address. A list of acceptable forms of ID is available on the Board of Election's website.

In the 49th Ward, voters can vote early at Willye B. White Park, 1610 W. Howard. A full list of early voting locations is available on the Chicago Board of Election's website

Voters are allowed to bring in notes with them to a polling place when casting their ballot. 
Apply to Vote by Mail by November 3
Any Chicago voter can file an online application to vote by mail for the 2022 Primary Election. A voter does not need a reason or an excuse to vote by mail.

Thanks to a new Illinois law, voters now have the option to join a permanent vote-by-mail roster to have their ballots sent directly to their preferred mailing address ahead of every election. Voters can opt into this option when applying for a Vote by Mail ballot online. 

Voters will receive a ballot in the mail with instructions on how to fill it out and return it. Any ballot that is postmarked Wednesday, November 9, or later cannot be counted by law. If a voter places a ballot envelope in a mail drop box on November 8 in the afternoon or evening, they risk the chance of the envelope being postmarked on November 9 and, therefore, being considered as ineligible to be counted. 

Voters may also return their mailed ballot to a Secured Drop Box at any Chicago Early Voting location before Election Day. Mail ballots may also be delivered personally to the Election Board at 69 W. Washington, Sixth Floor. 

Voters who request a mail ballot but would prefer to vote in person can surrender their mail ballot at any early voting location or their polling place on Election Day to opt for an in-person ballot instead. Voters are NOT allowed to vote by mail and at an in-person location, they must choose only one method of voting. 

If a person requests a mail ballot and it is not received by Election Day, voters will still have the opportunity to cast their ballot. Voters who do not receive or lose their mail ballot may complete an affidavit at their polling place on Election Day saying that the ballot was never received or that it was lost.

Find Your Polling Place on Election Day
Voters who want to vote at their polling place on Election Day can find their polling location by entering their information on the Board of Election's website. The 49th Ward office has also created an interactive map of the voting precinct and polling places that residents may access by clicking here

Precinct polling locations will be open from 6 am to 7 pm on Election Day, November 8, only. Voters may also vote at any early voting location in the city on Election Day.

You may register to vote at your polling place on Election Day. To do so, you must provide two forms of identification, one of which must show a current address. A list of acceptable forms of ID is available to view on the Chicago Board of Election's website.

Voters are allowed to bring in notes with them to the polling place when casting their ballot. 
How to Pull a Sample Ballot
Voters wanting to view a sample ballot ahead of casting their vote may obtain one on the Chicago Board of Election's website.

Simply input your information on the Board of Election's "Your Voter Information" page and click on "Search." From there, a new page will appear with information containing your polling place, ward, precinct, and more. From there, you will want to click on the second tab located at the top of the box that reads "Sample Ballot." This tab will contain the sample ballots for your address. 
Apply to be an Election Judge for the November General Election
The Chicago Board of Elections is seeking election judges and election coordinators ahead of the November 8 general election. Election judges can earn up to $230 and election coordinators can earn up to $450 for Election Day. 

Requirements of election judges:
  • Judges must be U.S. citizens. If they are 18 or older, they must be registered voters in Cook County.
  • Judges must be able to speak, read and write in English.
  • The Board of Elections encourages bilingual judges — especially those who speak Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Polish, Korean or Tagalog — to apply right away.
  • High school and college students can also apply.

Election judges’ responsibilities Include:

  • Arriving to the polling place 5 a.m. to set up on Election Day.
  • Opening the polls at 6 a.m.
  • Issuing the correct ballots to each voter and helping voters with registration and other questions through 7 p.m.
  • Completing reports after polls close.

Requirements of election coordinators:
  • Coordinators must be U.S. citizens. If they are 18 or older, they must be registered voters in Cook County.
  • Coordinators must have be able to speak and understand English.
  • Coordinators must have expertise in the operation, maintenance and proper use of a wide range of computer technologies.
  •  Coordinators must have a cellphone available for making and receiving calls and text messages on Election Day.
  • Coordinators have to complete all required training courses and successfully pass the examination after each class.
  • High school and college students can also apply.
Duties of election coordinators include: 
  • Ensuring the polling place is accessible to voters with disabilities by following an accessibility guideline/check-off list.
  • Serving all day on Election Day from 5 a.m. until all work is completed after the polls close and until election judges have secured their materials and are about to leave to deliver those materials to the receiving station.
  • Having extensive knowledge of the Election Day registration procedures and directing the voter-registration activities on the e-poll book in the precinct.
  • Assisting election judges with Election Day processes and procedures.
  • Troubleshooting equipment problems and making minor repairs, such as changing the paper tape rolls.
  • Assisting election judges with completing polling place closing paperwork

Halloween Happenings
49th Ward Candy Crawl October 31
Each year we work to provide safe and easy ways for families to go trick or treating in the 49th Ward. This year we're excited to bring back the Candy Crawl! Bring your children - or your pets - or both! The crawl will kick off at Alderwoman Hadden's office, 1447 W. Morse Ave, starting at 4 pm, where you can pick up your collecting bag, a map of participating businesses, and, of course, candy! Costumes are encouraged (because they are awesome). We hope to see you on Halloween!
Masquerade Ball at Good to Go
Good to Go is hosting a Halloween Masquerade Ball on Saturday, October 29, at 9 pm. There will be prizes for the best costume. The event is free to attend. More information is available online
Trick or Treat at Jarvis Square Tavern
Join in on the Halloween fun at Jarvis Square Tavern, 1502 W. Jarvis, on Sunday, October 30, from 10 am to 11:30 am. Wear your best costume and bring the kids to this family-friendly event. There will be pumpkin decorating, a costume party, live music, and on-site trick-or-treating.
Neighbors Table's Halloween Art Market
It's that time of year when things get spooky! Don't miss out on getting creeptastic with our community artists at The Glenwood Bar, 6962 N. Glenwood! The market will include art from our talented and beloved neighbors - some spooky, funky, creepy, and overall beautiful creations! 

Kid and dog friendly for some early trick-or-treating! The market will take place on Sunday, October 30, from 11 am to 2 pm. 
Dead on Damen Offers Neighbors a Space for a Spooky Gathering this Halloween
Neighbors at 7511 N. Damen have put up a Halloween display that spans the entire block. It's visible anytime, but on Halloween, they really let their Halloween spirit shine. 

This is their third year hosting a Halloween party. They'll open their gates from 4-9 pm and let people walk thru the display while stopping at several stations to fill their tummies. They'll offer hot cider, food and, of course, CANDY.  The event is all free of charge. They only ask those that can to donate to the Chicagoland Dog Rescue.

This is a great opportunity to meet neighbors and share in what has become a new Rogers Park tradition. For more information on the event, visit their Facebook page.
Candy Corner at Glenwood and Albion
Neighbors at the corner of Glenwood and Albion invite you to join them on Halloween for safe tick-or-treating! Dress in your best costume and swing by for some yummy treats. They even set up a bug-proboscis to slide the candy out! 
Free Haunted House at Pottawattomie Park
The Pottawattomie Park Advisory Council will host its annual Free Haunted House this year. This event will be indoors, accessible, appropriate for all ages, and free.  The Haunted house will run in the field house at Pottawattomie Park, 7340 N. Rogers, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Monday, October 31.

In advance of the event, the Pottawattomie Park Advisory Council is inviting neighbors to help set up the spectacularly spooky pace on Saturday, October 29, beginning at 10 am and working until it's sufficiently scary. 
Trunk or Treat at Willye White Park October 31
Willye White Park in partnership with the 24th District CAPS team will host its annual free Trunk or Treat event. This annual event provides a safe space for kids to join in on the Halloween festivities. Make sure to wear your best costume and collect treats. Participants will be provided with a trail to follow when they arrive. If it rains, the event will be moved indoors.

The event will take place on Monday, October 31, from 3:30-5:30 pm, at Willye White Park, 1610 W. Howard. 
Late Nite Horror at the New Four HunDREAD
Get in the Halloween spirit this season by watching a scary movie at our local New 400 Theatre! They're eating a classic horror movie every Friday and Saturday in October at 10:30 pm and will have special features on October 30 and 31.

Theatre Above the Law Presents: Grimm

Taking place in a cabaret bar, Grimm works to spin well-known tales into a modern story. Utilizing classic stories such as Little Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin, and more. Grimm will weave multiple stories together to present to the audience.

All audience members must show proof of full vaccination at the box office in the form of a picture of, photo copy of, or the actual vaccination card to be allowed to attend. ALL audience members must wear masks at all times while in the space.

The show will take place Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through October 30 at the Jarvis Square Theater at 1439 W. Jarvis. More information is available here

Día de los Muertos from Laughter November 1
The Glenwood, 6962 N. Glenwood, will host a special comedy show on Tuesday, November 1, at 7:30 pm.

Día de los Muertos from Laughter will have special guest host Bruce G to help emcee the evening, which is sure to be full of fun and laughter. Arrive at 7 pm to sign up for the open mic and costume contest. There will be a $100 cash prize for the best set and best costume. 
Don't Trash It, Smash It! 
The Edgewater Environmental Coalition is hosting its annual "Green Your Halloween" event. On Saturday, November 6, from noon until 4 pm, swing by the parking lot located at 6040 N. Clark (just north of the fire station) with your pumpkin in tow. 

The goal is to have some Halloween-related fun while reducing waste. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about the advantages of composting food waste. In the last two years, the Edgewater Pumpkin Smash has diverted 8.1 tons of pumpkins from area landfills dropped off by hundreds of area residents. 

The event is free. Residents are welcome to drop off their pumpkins without getting out of their cars or join in the smashing fun by tossing their pumpkins in the giant compost container. ECC requests that all pumpkins dropped off are free of non-biodegradable materials such as candles, plastic, or metal decorations.

Community Engagement
Glenwood Comedy 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at The Glenwood Bar
Enjoy some laughs and libations every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at The Glenwood Bar, 6962 N. Glenwood. The bar will host Glenwood Comedy, featuring comics and performers sure to keep you entertained. 

Glenwood Comedy runs from 7:30-9:30 pm, with sign-ups beginning at 7 pm. Those interested in performing or hosting should contact Anthony at 312-788-4309.
Events at the Rogers Park Branch Library
The Rogers Park Branch Library, 6907 N. Clark, offers a variety of events and programming for people of all ages. Make sure to check out a list of their upcoming events and register to attend one. More information is available on its website here
Gale Centennial Celebration November 10
Gale is turning 100! To celebrate, the Gale LSC is organizing a student-focusd Centennial Celebration that will celebrate the school's history and unify local residents in a common purpose to support the school. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our local elementary school

The event will take place on Thursday, November 10, from 4:30-6:30 pm at 1631 W. Jonquil. Swing by and join in on the festivities! 
North Side AARP Meeting November 1
The Chicago Northside AARP Community Group will hold its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 1, at 12:30 pm. This month, North Side AARP members who are veterans will share their stories about their service in honor of Veterans Day.

NieghborsTables Art Markets Sundays at the Glenwood Bar
 Join your creative neighbors every Sunday at The Glenwood Bar, 6962 N. Glenwood, for the NeighborsTables Art Markets! Makers and creators of all sorts share their talents and gifts with you! The NeighborsTables Markets take place every Sunday between 11 am and 2:30 pm.

Help the United Church of Rogers Park Update its Exit Signs
After nearly three years in its social hall, the United Church of Rogers Park is ready to move back into its Sanctuary!

However, to pass the city’s building inspection, it needs to update the exit and security lights throughout the building. The expense is above and beyond what they have, so they are asking neighbors to help them raise $12,000 to bring the signs up to code so they can move back into the Sanctuary.

Donate Gently Used Clothing to Gale's Care Closet
The Gale community is working to meet the needs of its students, both in and out of the classroom. They understand that there are barriers students face when trying to get to school and focusing on school work. 

In 2019, Gale Student Ambassadors surveyed students to determine what were some challenges they faced when trying to get their education. They were able to identify one of the barriers to learning as bullying and another as low attendance. The students felt like they didn't have clothes or items to come to school in, or when they came in clothing not clean or fitting, they were bullied. These things led to them staying home. Every year, Gale has conducted this survey and gotten the same results. 

In 2021, Gale decided to do something and started a small care closet. HOW? A teacher at Gale brought in all of her children's gently used items and then began speaking to family, friends, and coworkers to do the same. Those efforts helped launch the Gale Care Closet, where over 30 students grab everyday items, personal hygiene products, as well as 8th-grade event outfits. This year, they would like to reach even more students and Gale student alumni who are still in need. 

How can you help? Donate gently used items you may have, or drop off personal hygiene items to Gale's Care Closet at 7650 N. Marshfield Mondays through Thursdays from 10 am to 4:30 pm.

Our local non-profit, C24/7, recently acquired the vacant lot located at 1561 W. Howard, and they are looking to transform the space into a community center that will help them scale up their services and give back to the Howard-area community. 

Their vision is a community center that serves as a hub for resources, information, and building community. It will host an after-school program, a job development program, violence prevention efforts and resources, a food pantry, financial literacy classes, parenting classes, mental health support, and drug and alcohol recovery groups. It will also have a gym where people can safely participate in a variety of activities. 

C24/7 has built strong community relationships in the north of Howard area, and this will help them expand their services and fill a need in our community.

The CTA Unveils its Proposed 2023 Budget
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) unveiled its proposed $1.8 billion operating budget this week. The budget will maintain fares at its current levels and pursue new capital projects in 2023, including:
  • All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP), to make CTA’s rail system 100% vertically accessible. 
  • Expansion of electric bus fleet, part of CTA’s commitment to complete the electrification of the entire bus fleet by the year 2040. 
  • Refresh & Renew, an expanded and accelerated rail station improvement program. 
  • Better Streets for Buses, a comprehensive, citywide plan for bus-priority streets.

Pace Announce Public Hearings for 2023 Budget

Pace unveiled a proposed 2023 budget for community input. Folks may submit their feedback and input during a series of public hearings between October 20 and October 28. The hearings, a mix of in-person and virtual events, will present a fully funded operating budget for fixed route and Paratransit service and a strong capital program.

There are no fare increases included in the proposed budget. In fact, Pace plans to make it even more affordable to use public transportation. Building on 2022 price decreases, which included lower Pace/CTA pass prices, a lower Vanpool Fare for riders who commute less than 5 days per week, and a new Pace/CTA/Metra Regional Connect Pass, Pace proposes to eliminate transfer costs for riders who transfer from one regular Pace route to another and to lower other transfer costs.

Pace is also partnering with CTA on new money-saving 1-day and 3-day passes that allow unlimited rides on both services. While previously waived Taxi Access Program (TAP) and DuPage Uber Access Program fares will be reinstated, they will remain lower (proposed at $2) than the original $3. 

Pace also proposes investing significant resources into the electrification of the agency’s North Division in Waukegan, which will be the foundational project for electrifying the whole region and bringing the agency closer to their goal of a zero-emission bus fleet by 2040.

This budget proposal also removes uncertainty about the fate of 69 fixed routes that have not operated since the spring of 2020. Those suspended routes are proposed to be formally eliminated with the adoption of the 2023 budget, with the goal of reallocating that funding into more productive and useful services through next year’s bus route network revitalization initiative.

Members of the public who wish to provide comments on Pace’s proposed 2023 budget may do so by attending the in-person hearings; registering for the virtual hearings; submitting comments online via Pace’s Public Hearing Feedback webpage or by email to Public.Hearings@PaceBus.com; calling (847) 354-7943; or by sending comments via mail to Pace, Community Relations Department, 550 W. Updated Bivalent Boosters Now Available!
The City of Chicago received the free updated bivalent COVID boosters this week.

The new boosters offer greater protection against common COVID-19 variants than the original shots and are available to anyone aged 12 and older who have already received their initial vaccine shots. People age 12 and up who have completed a primary vaccine series should receive a bivalent booster two months after the second dose of their last booster shot. 

The updated booster is widely available throughout the city, including at doctors' offices, hospitals, pharmacies, and community health centers. To find a location where you can receive the bivalent booster shot, visit the Chicago Department of Public Health's website.

Monkeypox Virus (MPV) is spread through close contact with body fluids, sores, shared bedding or clothing, or respiratory droplets (kissing, coughing, sneezing). Common symptoms include a rash or unusual sores that look like pimples or blisters on the face, body, and genitals. Symptoms also include fever, head or muscle aches, chills, and swelling of the lymph nodes. If you think you have the MPV or are showing symptoms, it's time to reach out to your healthcare provider.

Apply for Student Loan Debt Relief
Individuals looking to apply for student debt relief may do so by visiting studentaid.gov. While the Eight Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis has temporarily blocked the Biden administration from disbursing any student loan relief funds, it does not prevent borrowers from still applying for student loan debt relief. 

The Federal Student Loan Debt Relief program provides eligible borrowers with full or partial discharge of loans up to $20,000 to Federal Pell Grant recipients and up to $10,000 to non-Pell Grant recipients for individuals who make less than $125,000/year or families that make less than $250,000/year.

Stormwater Management Tips for Fall
With fall and winter approaching, we can still see weather conditions that can lead to flooding. No longer just a problem in spring, the Department of Water Management (DWM) encourages residents to assist in reducing excess water from reaching the sewer system.
Community-wide efforts can greatly decrease the impact of neighborhood flooding and the extent of basement backups by taking the following steps:
  • Sweep up leaves from driveways, sidewalks, and streets.
  • Clean roof gutters and drains of leaves.
  • Keep nearby catch basin grates clear of yard waste and trash.
  • Don’t litter or dump anything in storm drains. Storm drains are for rain only.
  • Avoid running a dishwasher or washing machine during storms.
  • Use a commercial car wash or wash your car over grass or gravel instead of on a driveway or in the street.
  • Do not dump fats/oils/greases down the drain or down catch basins in the street.
  • Disconnect your downspout from the sewer system. Make sure to direct flow to areas with permeable surfaces that can properly absorb the stormwater or use rain barrels to collect the rain directly from the downspouts. See DWM’s website for a guide on downspout disconnection.
  • Before winter, empty your rain barrel and store in a garage or shed.

IHDA Reopening Mortage Assistance Program November 1
The Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) is reopening its mortgage assistance program designed to assist homeowners financially impacted by the pandemic. Applications will open on Tuesday, November 1, 2022. The Illinois Homeowner Assistance Fund (ILHAF) provides up to $30,000 in mortgage assistance to eligible homeowners—paid directly to the servicer, taxing body, or other approved entity—while homeowners work to regain their financial footing. Whether homeowners have a mortgage, a reverse mortgage, or are mortgage-free, the program can fund past due housing payments and up to three months of prospective mortgage payments.

The program is free, and funds do not need to be repaid. Application, program information and updates can be found at illinoishousinghelp.org or by calling the ILHAF hotline at 1-866-IL-HELP (866-454-3571). Applications will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, 2023.

Home and Business Protection Program Income-Based Application
The City of Chicago has expanded the Home and Business Protection Program (HBPP) to remove barriers and ensure that more Chicago residents have access to the tools needed to protect their properties and feel safe. Through the new HBPP Income-Based Application, eligible Chicagoans can apply for private security devices at no cost based on income and pick them up at a designated community distribution site. The program is first-come, first-serve. It will run through December 31, 2024, or until funds are depleted, whichever comes first.

Home and Business Protection Program
The City of Chicago has launched the Home and Business Protection Program (HBPP) to ensure that Chicagoans have access to private security equipment to protect their property and feel safe. Starting today, the City will provide select rebates to cover costs associated with outdoor security camera systems, cloud storage for video footage, outdoor motion-sensor lighting, vehicle GPS trackers, and subscription costs.

Only security devices purchased on or after Monday, June 6, qualify for reimbursement. No rebates will be provided for private security equipment purchased prior to this date. Installation costs of cameras, lighting, and GPS tracking devices are currently not eligible for reimbursement.

This includes community partnerships, referral relationships, community awareness of HHC services, health insurance education and enrollment efforts, and other initiatives that address the need in the community including those that impact immigrants and refugees. In addition, this position works collaboratively with operational and clinical staff to support improved customer service and healthcare access for patients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic direction for all HHC’s community outreach initiatives.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with key community organizations and public officials to advance patient growth, access to healthcare, and increase HHC visibility including patient referral initiatives and other collaborations that meet patient needs, and promote health equity in the communities served by HHC.
  • Oversee HHC’s Community Advisory Boards and HHC’s internal community outreach committee.
  • Grow and maintain relationship with immigrant and refugee partners; including supporting: a refugee health task force of refugee serving organization; translation needs; cultural competency training for staff; and access to HHC services.
  • Oversee and provide strategic direction for the health coverage outreach and enrollment program and supervise the coordinator of the program as well as lead in-service health insurance trainings for staff.
  • Participate in city, regional and statewide healthcare initiatives that impact our target patient population and other efforts the support HHC’s ability to enhance and grow services and access to care.
  • Work collaboratively with marketing, operational, clinical and financial staff and on internal committees to support improved customer service and healthcare access for patients.
  • Participate in other activities as assigned.
Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Experience with individual advocacy, community outreach and working with immigrants and refugees.
  • Experience working in a healthcare setting.
  • Strong writing and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, health care providers and community members.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, manage several projects and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft word, PowerPoint and excel.
  • Bilingual in Spanish or another language preferred.

6. Identify and compile key metrics from all 3 programs - to create graphics, charts, statistics and quotes for use in marketing materials.
7. Develop and manage email marketing content (experience with Constant Contact a plus)
8. Website design and maintenance (experience with Squarespace a plus)
9. Create content and manage Social Media Platforms
10. Other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will be highly organized, self-motivated and detail oriented. He or she will have previous work experience in a similar role and truly enjoy working with the families who walk through our doors. Hands-on expertise with Google Suite and Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PP) is necessary. Ability to work independently as well as part of a small team is crucial. College degree preferred.
