AFTER THE FLOOD

Good Afternoon Neighbors,

On Sunday, the north side of Chicago experienced a supercell storm, wherein parts of the city received 4 inches of rain in a short period of time. This resulted in several buildings, including my own, flooding. My office has been submitting service requests to the Department of Water Management to report these issues and we are maintaining a list of these reports so we can have a complete picture of the damage experienced in our ward. We will be taking this list to the Department of Water Management for continued conversations about how we can ensure we have resilient infrastructure throughout our city, as the intensity and frequency of these storm events are expected to continue due to the impacts of climate change. If you experienced basement flooding, please report it to my office so we can ensure it's documented for those conversations by calling us at 773-338-5796 or emailing us at office@49thward.org

CLEANING UP
Many individuals have bulky items  and extra waste that they now need to dispose of due to the flooding. Streets and Sanitation crews are working hard this week collecting items from households that have City pick up. If you receive city services (that is, live in a building with four or fewer units), you can put your bulk pick-up items in the alley for city crews to collect.

Buildings that do not receive city pick up (private businesses and buildings with five or more units) will need to coordinate a bulk pick up with their private disposal company.
You should call your building management company or contact your condo board to let them know to call for a bulk or extra pick up. Leaving bulk items and garbage in the alley next your dumpster can cause you to incur fines if left for too long.

I want to thank everyone who helped one another during this storm event by clearing out storm drains and assisting neighbors who experienced flooding. 49th Ward neighbors continue to exemplify what it means to be a community, and I am grateful to be a part of it.
