Welcome to the first EAPC newsletter of 2020!   We wish all of our members, friends and colleagues a happy and healthy new year and would like to thank you for your support.

The European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) is a membership organisation dedicated to lobbying and advocating for the promotion and development of palliative care throughout Europe and beyond. Our mission is to influence, promote and advocate for the delivery of high-quality palliative care across the life span by fostering and sharing palliative care education, research, policy and evidence-based practice.

With increasing global interest in palliative care research, Palermo is set to be centre stage between 14-16 May 2020 when it hosts the next EAPC World Research Congress. Abstract Submission Update 
For those of you who submitted your abstracts for the EAPC 11th World Research Congress … the wait is nearly over…. the abstracts have been marked and you will hear from us before end January.

EAPC Researcher Awards 2020 - will be announced in advance of the Congress. This year there will be two Early Researcher Awards and one Post Doctoral-Award.   View previous winners here

Vittorio Ventafridda Memorial Lecture was established in 2010, in honour of one of the EAPC's founding members, Vittorio Ventafridda.  A keynote speaker is selected by the Scientific Committee to deliver the Vittorio Ventafridda Lecture at each biennial EAPC World Research Network Congress. The inaugral EAPC Cicely Saunders Award will be awarded at the EAPC Congress in Palermo.  The award is given to an individual who has made a broad contribution to palliative care, either in research, clinical practice or in organisation/policy that has made a difference in the practice of palliative care.  The award is open to all members of the multidisciplinary team (reflecting Dame Cicely's three healthcare professions).  The recipient is nominated and selected by the congress scientific committee. The first recipient of this award will be announced shortly.

Paediatric Palliative Care Satellite Conference Palermo
  • A seminar dedicated to research in paediatric palliative care with a theme ‘Putting Research into Practice’. Topics will include Advance Care Planning; Communication and Interventions in Pain and Symptom Management.

Call for Proposal Parallel Sessions - Helsinki, Finland 2021
The 17th World Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care “Exploring new dimensions” is taking place from the 20-22 May 2021 in Helsinki, Finland.   The Scientific Committee is now seeking proposals for parallel sessions from individuals, EAPC Taskforces, European Research Projects and other groups for the congress programme.  Further details here.
Completed proposals must be received by latest 5pm on 31st January 2020 to  scicom@eapcnet.eu.
 
EAPC Task Forces
EAPC Task Forces are formed by interested EAPC members from a range of disciplines and different countries who collaborate together on projects to improve palliative care by working on focused, time limited projects.

Aging and Palliative Care
Aims to advance our understanding of palliative care for older people, particularly those with frailty, identify key areas for improving practice, policy and research, and compiling evidence-based practices to improve palliative care for older across a variety of settings.   

Education and Training in Palliative Care 
Aims to ensure that appropriate curricula exist for each profession working in the field of PC at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels, supporting the development of professional specialisation, comparable and reproducible assessment systems and research underpinning the evaluation of teaching contents and methods. 


International Palliative Care Family Carer Research Collaboration (IPCFRC)EAPC 
Aims to promote research into evidence-based support for family carers of palliative care patients by fostering interdisciplinary and international research, establishing international partnerships and promoting information exchange. Check out blog post next week for more info.

Spiritual Care
Aims to develop evidence-based care spiritual care models and practices as well as promoting high quality education.
EAPC Research Network

How to contribute to and how to utilise the EAPC RN (Research Network) The EAPC RN offers an open invitation for all healthcare professionals who see the potential in conducting European multicentre research, to take part in developing a platform for this type of research within the EAPC RN.

EAPC Research Network Junior Forum   The Junior Forum was established for young researchers to become an integral part of the solution to providing better palliative care. The initiative has been motivated by the wish of young researchers to work with international colleagues with similar levels of experience.
