Extreme weather events are increasing in severity and occurring almost five times as frequently as 40 years ago, disrupting the education of nearly 40 million children a year. In 2020, extreme weather events triggered three times more internal displacements than violent conflicts, affecting an average of 27,000 children per day. According to UNICEF’s Children’s Climate Risk Index, almost all of the extremely high-risk countries are already considered fragile contexts. This event brings together youth advocates alongside political actors and key partners to spotlight the impact of the climate crisis on the world’s most marginalised children already living in fragile contexts and discuss what we can do about it.
This event is co-hosted by FCDO, Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) – with:
  • MP Helen Grant, UK Special Envoy for Girls’ Education
  • Hon. Minister Sengeh, Sierra Leone Minister of Basic and Secondary Education
  • Anne Beath Tvinnereim, Norwegian Minister for International Development
  • Nenna, Youth Representative from Transform Education
  • Gillian Caldwell, USAID Senior Climate Adviser
  • Graham Lang, ECW Chief of Education
  • Rossella Pagliuchi-Lor, UNHCR Representative to the UK
Recorded interventions from:
  • Yasmine Sherif, Education Cannot Wait Director
  • Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees
