This week, crews are finishing preparing the road for paving. Today, Thursday, May 9 at 7 AM, crews closed the eastbound lane on S Columbian Way between Beacon Ave S and 24th Ave S to do base repairs. This detour will last through end of day Friday, May 10.

Nighttime paving for S Columbian Way and S Alaska St is scheduled to begin as early as Monday, May 13. Paving was delayed due to the need for additional base repair work. We appreciate your patience.

Upcoming work
Westbound traffic on S Columbian Way and S Alaska St will be closed during paving work.
Crews will be doing base repair work on S Columbian Way between Beacon Ave S and 24th Ave S.
  • Work hours from 7 AM to 5 PM, Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10
  • Crews will close the eastbound lane on S Columbian Way between Beacon Ave S and 24th Ave S
  • Detour: Eastbound traffic will be detoured to S Ferdinand St and 24th Ave S
Nighttime paving work starting on S Columbian Way / S Alaska St (excluding the Beacon Ave S intersection).
  • Work hours from 7 PM to 7 AM starting as early as Monday, May 13
  • Paving will take about 3 days to complete
  • Crews plan to start paving the eastbound lane on S Columbian Way and S Alaska St, and S Alaska Pl Monday night
  • Detours and traffic restrictions:
    • Between 7 PM and 7 AM, the street will be closed to westbound traffic between Beacon Ave S and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Please use S Orcas St or other nearby arterials as detours.
    • Eastbound traffic will be maintained
    • Limited turns to / from driveways where paving is happening
    • Access to S Columbian Way/S Alaska St from side streets will be closed. Please access side streets from S Ferdinand St.
    • S Columbian Way east of S Alaska St will be closed to all turns
    • Access to cars for people walking will be maintained when parked in driveways and on side streets; please use designated crossings for your safety
  • Striping will take place approximately 2 weeks after paving is complete

  • Work is scheduled for Saturday, May 18
  • Expect delays due to lane shifts and traffic holds
  • The intersection will remain open
    • Northbound traffic on Beacon Ave S will be detoured to 24th Ave S via S Ferdinand St
Biking through the work area: During this work, crews will need to close sections of the bike lanes on S Columbian Way to ensure they have enough space to complete work safely. We ask people biking to merge with general traffic when riding through the work area.

  • On-street parking and lane restrictions near work locations
  • Temporary sidewalk and crosswalk closures with signed detours
  • Noise, dust, concrete odors, and vibration
  • Access to businesses and homes will remain open
  • Work is weather dependent, so timing of work may change if needed
