Greetings | Saludos | salaam | 問候 |lời chào hỏi| salamu,

Starting as early as Monday, April 8, crews will begin night work to remove the top several inches of asphalt on S Columbian Way and S Alaska St between Beacon Ave S and Martin Luther King Jr. Way to prepare for paving. During work, the street will be closed to eastbound traffic.

We realize the inconvenience this work creates and appreciate your patience. Please contact the outreach team immediately if you have any accessibility needs or questions.
Please see below for additional details about upcoming work.

Upcoming work
Night work on S Columbian Way and eastbound detour
During grinding work, you can anticipate:
  • Work hours from 7 PM to 7 AM Monday, April 8 through Thursday, April 11 while crews work to minimize impacts to people traveling through the area. Crews have a temporary noise variance.
  • We expect grinding to take about 3 nights to complete.
  • Crews will focus work on one side of S Columbian Way/S Alaska St to maintain one lane of westbound traffic, then flip to the other side of the street.
  • Detours and traffic restrictions:
    • Between 7 PM and 7 AM, the street will be closed to eastbound traffic between Beacon Ave S and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Please use S Orcas St or other nearby arterials as detours.
    • Westbound traffic will be maintained.
    • Limited turns to / from driveways where grinding is happening.
    • Driveway access may be disrupted for 30 to 45 minutes as the grinding machine passes
    • Access to S Columbian Way/S Alaska St from side streets will be closed. Please access side streets from S Ferdinand St.
    • Access to cars for people walking will be maintained when parked in driveways and on side streets; please use designated crossings for your safety.
  • There will be rough pavement and steel plates on the roadway after grinding is complete.
  • Grinding will cause noise and dust.
Street repairs
  • Following grinding, crews will complete casting repairs, concrete base repairs, and asphalt base repairs. This work will happen during the day and will be noisy.
Paving work
  • Crews plan to pave the street at night the week of April 15, following grinding work. This work is weather dependent. Traffic control will remain the same for this work.
  • Once paving is complete, temporary striping will be installed.
Biking through the work area: During this work, crews will need to close sections of the bike lanes on S Columbian Way to ensure they have enough space to complete work safely. We ask people biking to merge with general traffic when riding through the work area.
