Welcome to the first Quarterly EURITO newsletter, where you can keep up to date on the progress of the project, the latest news and interesting opinion pieces on new mapping methods (data, software, and knowledge) in the Research and Innovation (R&I) ecosystem.

In this issue, we are delighted to share:
  • Introduction to the EURITO Project. Learn more about the Horizon 2020 project that aims to place new research and innovation analytics at the centre of the policymaking process.
  • Literature Review “The role of data in the R&I policy cycle”. We reviewed the history of data usage along the research and innovation policy cycle, analysed the emerging opportunities offered by new data and analytics, as well as the needs and requirements of policymakers.
  • Conclusions from the first EURITO Policy Maker Workshop (17 April 2018). An opportunity to validate and gain feedback from key users on findings from literature review, we sought first-hand insight from R&I policymakers at this EURITO Policy Maker Workshop.
  •  A story of reinventing research and innovation indicators. Findings so far and vision of the project communicated in the form of a creative blog.
  • Upcoming activities and events in the next months.

Introduction to EURITO

Funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 Programme under Grant Agreement 770420, EURITO was officially launched in January 2018. This 3-year project, composed of four Consortium partners, Nesta (UK), Fraunhofer FOKUS (Germany), DTU (Denmark) and COTEC (Spain), aims to create a new generation of relevant, inclusive, timely, trusted and open (‘RITO’) indicators for better informed and impactful policymaking, enhancing the impact of Research and Innovation policies in Europe, making R&I policy-making processes more transparent and democratic. Read more...
Literature Review “The role of data in the R&I policy cycle”
EURITO aims to provide a robust foundation of the use of data and indicators along the policy life cycle. As a first step, we launched an intensive review of existing literature to identify the evidence needs of R&I policymakers along the policy cycle, from agenda setting to policy design, implementation and evaluation. We found some interesting insight that will feed into the development of our project. Read more...

First EURITO Policy Maker Workshop

Close to 30 R&I policymakers from the European Commission and national ministries participated in the interactive workshop on last 17 April, in Brussels. The main aim of the workshop, organised in close cooperation with the Research Executive Agency (REA) and Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), was to validate findings from the literature review as well as to gather first-hand insight on current R&I indicator applications and existing and long-term needs from key users. Read more...

EURITO Blog “A story of reinventing research and innovation indicators”

A creative introduction to the project, the blog aims to weave together the rationale and vision for the project based on findings that emerged from work done so far.

Upcoming Events

September sees a Knowledge Stakeholder Workshop, implementing a similar strategy to the Policy Stakeholder Workshop, but rather than from the viewpoint of users, it will be according to the experience of developers from the R&I ecosystem, including researchers, analysts, and data community. Keep in touch via our social media platforms for more information in due course.
