REMINDER: Health checks submissions due soon.

As per our previous updates, the current NHS Health Checks contract will come to an end as of tomorrow, Friday 30 April 2021. We are aware that practices are still submitting activity claims covering the period up to this date.
We remind you that the last submission date for all health check submissions for contract year 2020/2021 will be the Saturday 15 May 2021. No payments will be made for submissions made after this date.
Please find enclosed the most up to date toolkit and guidance for both SystmOne and EMIS.
In light of the benefits many practices derive from Health Checks, we plan to work with the Council to ensure funding in this area is maintained whilst the council do further market testing ahead of procurement for a new contract to begin in April 2022.

Thank you for your cooperation and continued support. If you have any questions, please contact us by emailing

Ground breaking Primary Care Research into COVID-19

PRINCIPLE is a nationwide clinical study investigating primary care treatments for early-stage COVID-19. 29 GP practices across Sheffield have played an important role in this ground breaking study recruiting 45 participants in 2020/2021. The latest interim results show that inhaled budesonide can reduce the recovery time for COVID-19 positive patients being managed within primary care.

This is the first COVID-19 treatment for use in the UK within a community setting and highlights the importance of primary care research delivery.  If you're interested in getting involved in research delivery you can contact the PCS Research Office for support and advice  or visit the PCS website for available studies.

Extended access appointments – things to remember when making an appointment
Four things you might find useful to remember when making an appointment at an extended access hub…
  1. For GP appointments in the cold hubs, all patients need to be triaged by a clinician prior to booking. The triage appointments can be booked up to 5 days in advance. The clinical assessment, including an assessment of the patient’s Covid status, should be documented on the patient’s notes.
  1. For hot hubs all patients will be texted by PCS after you have booked the appointment, there is no need to send a text message via your practice systems as we will confirm location and arrival instructions in advance of the appointment.
  1. Remember to ask all patients to bring a face covering with them to their appointment, unless they are in an excluded group.
  1. The City Taxis service can only be used for travel to a Covid-19 hub.

CCG process for outbreak management

The CCG has shared guidance about who is a contact of a COVID-19 positive healthcare worker and what action is required.

Read the guidance

Swabbing for patients who attend hot hub appointments

Following feedback and to help protect capacity for those who need to be seen face-to-face for symptoms (not just for testing), we are asking that patients requiring a COVID test are encouraged to book one by either calling 119 or booking an appointment online, rather than being booked into a hot hub appointment.

The hot hubs will continue to offer COVID swabs to patients attending who meet the referral criteria and where there is clinical benefit. This is done to minimise journeys for patients who should be self-isolating with symptoms of COVID and also to assist in swabbing of those patients who would otherwise have difficulty accessing a Tier 2 centre.

Training for PCN staff: New dates added

Register below for free CPR and fire safety training sessions which are available to any PCN-employed staff. These sessions are provided by Primary Training Solutions.

We have added two new courses:
Health and Safety+ this session encompasses Health and Safety, Information Governance, Infection Control (non-clinical), and Moving and Handling (non-clinical) content. This newly-developed course offers the benefit of combining four mandatory training courses into one comprehensive session.

Moving and Handling Clinical (especially recommended for clinical staff) this course will be delivered face-to-face and provides an ideal approach to safer and more effective manual handling – not only meeting HSE recommendations, but also promoting good and safe practices in any situation.
Places are offered on a first-come first-served basis, however if your choice of date is fully booked please add your details to the waiting list and we will contact you if a place becomes available. This course will be delivered via the Zoom platform so all booked staff must have appropriate equipment (computer/laptop with microphone and camera)

Please note that we continue to offer the CPR sessions 'in person' in line with national guidance. These sessions will follow the government's COVID-19 secure guidelines in full.
