For Action
Extended Access GP shifts from April 2021

We are pleased to confirm the continuing arrangements for Extended Access from 1 April 2021. They are essentially a continuation of the terms agreed between PCS and practices in relation to the 2019-2021 contract.
Practices providing GP cover for Hub sessions will receive £3 for each registered patient as at January 2021, these will be spread into 4 equal payments as below:
  • Practices providing GP cover for Hub sessions will receive £3 for each registered patient as at January 2021, these will be spread into 4 equal payments made at the end of each quarter (30 June, 30 September and 31 December 2021 and 31 March 2022).
  • Practice rotas will continue to be shared by Service Coordinators monthly in advance.  The April rota will be sent out this week.
  • To assist practices, shifts will ordinarily be spread evenly over the course of the year, i.e. a target number of shifts each quarter.
  • Wherever practicable, practices will be allocated shifts in nearby Hubs.
If your practice participates in this scheme presently, you do not need to do anything further. We will roll over our contract until 31 March 2022 automatically.
If you would like to join the scheme, or if you have any questions, please contact without delay.

Remember, you don’t need to provide GP cover in the Hubs in order for your patients to access the service. It is open to all registered patients in the city.

Share your views to prioritise research into improvements to the ‘daily annoyances’ that interrupt a GPs’ work

Research conducted with GPs in the East of England identified a range of issues from crashing computers, unavailable test results and missing hospital letters, as frequent interruptions affecting GPs work. Known collectively as operational failures these issues have an impact on effective working and time spent with patients.

If you are a GP currently working in general practice across the UK, we would like your opinion on which operational failures to prioritise for future improvement research. We invite you to participate in an online survey, with the aim of building consensus on the most important problems that are frustrating GPs’ work.

Further information about the survey can be found on the research website here and the survey can be accessed via the link below.

Prescription Order Line service (POL)
You may be aware that PCS expressed an interest in the Prescription Order Line service. Our initial development work with the CCG identified some financial and operational challenges that need to be resolved to make this service deliverable. At this point the CCG is exploring options around next steps internally and directly with practices; we remain keen to support both the CCG and practices in securing a future model.
Closure of the Clover Group branch surgery at Jordanthorpe

Following a consultation with patients, and approval by the CCG, the Clover Practice branch surgery at Jordanthorpe Health Centre will be closed permanently from this Friday 26 February.

Earlier this year we made the decision to go out to consultation to explore the impact on patients if the Jordanthorpe branch were to close.  The site had become unviable due to a number of factors and after the relocation of the Meadowgreen Practice into the Jordanthorpe Health Centre in 2020 it made sense to close the site to ensure sustainable healthcare for patients in the area.
Many of the brilliant team at Jordanthorpe have worked at the practice for many years, over 20 in some cases, and over this time they have continued to provide great care for generations of families despite the challenges that the practice has faced.
The team has continued to prove their dedication to patients by supporting patients to transfer their care to their new GP practices, paying particular attention to those with complex additional needs.

A huge thank you to the team at Jordanthorpe for the work that you have done over the years – you have achieved so much for your patients.
Good luck to those doing HSJ presentations

Good luck to both the teams presenting to the HSJ Award judges today. Both the Seven Hills PCN 'vulnerable person visiting service' and 'Sheffield COVID-19 community testing' services are great examples innovation, dynamism, and teamwork. Good luck!
Training for PCN staff: New dates added

Register below for free CPR and fire safety training sessions which are available to any PCN-employed staff. These sessions are provided by Primary Training Solutions.

We have added two new courses:
Health and Safety+ this session encompasses Health and Safety, Information Governance, Infection Control (non-clinical), and Moving and Handling (non-clinical) content. This newly-developed course offers the benefit of combining four mandatory training courses into one comprehensive session.

Moving and Handling Clinical (especially recommended for clinical staff) this course will be delivered face-to-face and provides an ideal approach to safer and more effective manual handling – not only meeting HSE recommendations, but also promoting good and safe practices in any situation.
Places are offered on a first-come first-served basis, however if your choice of date is fully booked please add your details to the waiting list and we will contact you if a place becomes available. This course will be delivered via the Zoom platform so all booked staff must have appropriate equipment (computer/laptop with microphone and camera)

Please note that we continue to offer the CPR sessions 'in person' in line with national guidance. These sessions will follow the government's COVID-19 secure guidelines in full.
