Meet New Coalition Board Members
Pastor Marvin Kirkwood joined the Coalition Board of Directors in November 2020. He is the founder and pastor of Contagious Life Church which recently relocated from 76th & Troost to 99th & Holmes. He has led many community programs over the years focused on youth development along with conflict mediation and crime reduction. Pastor Kirkwood and his church members are generous and passionate about helping their neighbors. They operate the "Life Mart," a mini-grocery store with all free items. Pastor Kirkwood helped launched the "Treats on Troost" Halloween event in partnership with the Coalition and local businesses.

                 Pastor Marvin Kirkwood                    Johnnie Wilson

Mr. Johnnie Wilson, CEO and President of Wilson Brother’s Entertainment, also joined the Board of Directors in November 2020. His company owns and operates the Rain Restaurant & Bar at 80th & Troost. Mr. Wilson has served the community through many non-profit organizations. His particular interests in crime prevention, community assistance to those facing financial challenges, and increasing community-building activities through entertainment and outdoor programming in the neighborhood's 40 acres of green spaces and parks will be a great asset to the neighborhood. Mr. Wilson will also serve as the Coalition’s liaison to the South Kansas City Alliance.

Neighborhood Updates:
  • A Special Use Permit for a proposed gas station/convenience store was denied by KCMO's City Plan Commission and dismissed by the Board of Zoning Adjustment in response to Coalition-led advocacy opposing the development
  • Thanks to an AARP Active Living Grant to the Coalition, 2 park benches were added to Rachel Morado Plaza which is located between Paseo and Hickman Mills. One bench is on the Paseo side and the other near the base of the Paseo Bridge where it crosses Hickman Mills Rd.
  • Watch for 15 new bike stations being installed in the next few weeks at three different green spaces in the neighborhood ... also provided by the AARP grant. Thank you AARP!
  • Neighbor Julie Farsted is sharing her talents and love for native plants in a project to beautify shuttered buildings in the neighborhood (with permission of course!) Her first painting is on a house on 77th Terr between Lydia and Troost. Keep a watch out for more artwork to come. Thank you Julie!
