Unit Recharter Submission Opportunities

Pathfinder District Units: Do you still need to turn in your Unit Recharter documentation, but weren't able to make it to our Roundtable meeting? We will have THREE additional opportunities to meet with the Commissioner & professional team to submit your Recharter, in different locations throughout the Council!

  • Saturday, Nov. 16th, 4-6pm @ Burger King, 4210 Killdeer Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46237
  • Monday, Nov. 18th, 6:30-8:30pm @ Greenwood United Methodist Church, 525 N Madison Ave, Greenwood, IN 46142
  • Thursday, Nov. 21st, 6:30-8:00pm @ Grace United Methodist Church, 1300 E Adams Dr, Franklin, IN 46131

As a reminder, in addition to submitting your Recharter via the Internet Recharter system, you need to bring the following, signed paperwork to turn in:

  • a printout of the Unit Recharter Renewal Report (the full report, not the E-Z version) signed by the Charter Organization (COR or Executive Officer) if not signed electronically;
  • a copy of the Annual Unit Charter Agreement (signed by Executive Officer and COR);
  • a copy of the Unit's Journey to Excellence Scoresheet (signed by the Unit Leader and Unit Committee Chair);
  • a signed copy of the new Additional Disclosures and Authorization Formfor EVERY registered adult leader in your Unit;
  • any outstanding new and/or transfer applications for Scouts and Leaders (with YPT Certificates, as appropriate);
  • a check for payment of the total amount due on the Recharter application (unless the funds were approved for withdrawal from a Unit account on an eCheck payment through Internet Rechartering); AND ...
  • a date, time and location to submit for your Unit's Friends of Scouting Campaign Presentation, to take place between now and March 30, 2020.

Also be sure to check on your Leaders' YPT expiration dates! Any Leader whose YPT will expire before March 30, 2020, should go ahead and renew that training NOW to prevent issues with Recharter processing.

Update: The District Winter Camporee is Now the Inaugural Western Section Klondike

As was discussed during yesterday's Scouts BSA & Venturing breakout meeting at the monthly Pathfinder District Roundtable, we are proud to announce we will be participating in the inaugural Western Section Klondike at Camp Cullom this January 10-12, 2020! This event will replace the District Winter Camporee as part of our new Sectional Camporee program, and will be hosted and organized by Sugar Creek District's volunteers.

Also, as part of the Sectional Camporee program, each District in our Section will be leading the charge on our upcoming Camporees! Here's the information we have as of now:

  • Spring 2020 Western Section Camporee: May 1-3, 2020; Camp Krietenstein; Hosted by Wabash Valley District (details TBA)
  • Fall 2020 Western Section Camporee: Dates and Location TBD; Hosted by Hou Koda District
  • Winter 2021 Western Section Camporee: Dates and Location TBD; Hosted by Pathfinder District
As we discussed last night, this is an exciting evolution in our Camporee program, and will allow all our Districts to produce a better event for our Scouts. We can't wait to see all of our Troops and Crews there!

2020 Pathfinder District Awards Dinner: Awards Nominations are Now Open!

Here's a message on behalf of the Pathfinder District Awards Committee:

Fellow Scouters,

We are encouraging everyone to get on their thinking caps and be looking around their units for the outstanding leadership that has been displayed by individuals around you. We are sending out this nomination form for the awards that will be presented this year at our Pathfinder District Gala.

Please review the form and nominate those you feel would be a good candidate for the award. Remember to give your leaders a really detailed write-up so the Nominating Committee will also know what great volunteers that we have in our District and the many hours they have dedicated to making sure the scouts have a great program.

We are asking for your help in making this a great evening to celebrate our many wonderful volunteers in our district. Submit the attached form for as many volunteers that you feel qualify for the many awards we will be present at our Gala.

Below see the nomination form.  Please fill out only one volunteer on each form. The deadline for submissions will be January 3, 2020, we are excited to see the great work that is going on thru out our district and to celebrate our many recognized volunteers at this event.

The awards for which the Awards Committee is seeking nominations include:

  • District Award of Merit - A Council award presented by Districts, in the same manner the Silver Beaver is a national award presented by Councils. The award is available to Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the District level. The award is made available annually on the basis of 1 for each 25 traditional units or fraction thereof. It is not appropriate to nominate a Scouter who has already received this award. A professional Scouter or other Council employee may not receive this award based on employment service. However, a professional Scouter or employee who also serves as a volunteer Scouter may be eligible, based on volunteer service.
  • Scoutmaster of the Year - To recognize one outstanding Scoutmaster each year for their dedication to the Scouts in the Scouting program. This individual is one who provides the best possible program for the Scouts in his/her troop. This awards is for Scoutmasters only.
  • Cubmaster of the Year - To recognize one outstanding Cubmaster each year for their dedication to the Scouts in the Scouting program. This individual is one who provides the best possible program for the Scouts in his/her pack. This awards is for Cubmasters only.
  • Venture/Sea Scout Leader of the Year - To recognize one Outstanding Venturing/Sea Scout Leader each year for their dedication to the Scouts in the Scouting program. This individual is one who provides the best possible program for the Scouts in his/her crew or ship. This awards is for Crew Advisors / Ship Skippers only.
  • Partners in Scouting Award - A unique award for a married couple involved in leadership positions in Scouting
  • Guiding Light Award - Awarded to a volunteer that most exemplifies Scouting Spirit in their actions and commitment to Scouting. This recipient works to make a difference. Only one award per unit.
  • Pathway Award - Each year we will award a Chartered Organization who had gone beyond the charter agreement a to support Scouting. This award recognizes the work of our Chartered partners.

Nominations for the 2020 Pathfinder District Committee Now Open

On November 13, 2019, the following message was sent on Behalf of Ryan Dillon, Pathfinder District Nominating Chair, to the voting members of Pathfinder District (Charter Organization Representatives and District Committee Members At-Large):
 

OFFICIAL NOTICE
PATHFINDER DISTRICT ANNUAL MEETING

As a voting member of the Pathfinder District of the Crossroads of America Council, you are hereby notified of the Annual Meeting of the Pathfinder District to convene promptly at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at [location incorrect].  Please arrive before 6:25 PM to check in.  

The agenda of the Annual Meeting will include annual reports of the District Committee, the report of the district Nominating Committee and vote on the proposed slate, and such other business as may regularly be considered by the District Committee.   Any nominations to be considered by the Nominating Committee should be submitted to any member of the Committee at earliest possible convenience, but in any event not later than November 28, 2019.  Nominations will not be accepted from the floor, and a single vote will be held to accept or reject the slate presented by the Nominating Committee.  Members of the Nominating Committee include:

Final Opportunity for IOLS / BALOO Training in 2019: December 14th-15th

If you need to complete the Intro to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS) or Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) trainings before the end of the year, you have ONE more opportunity to do so! Crossroads of America Council will be offering IOLS & BALOO training December 14th-15th at Camp Belzer.

IOLS is required training for Scoutmasters, Ass’t. Scoutmasters, and Crew Advisers; it is also a recommended for Troop and Crew Committee Members, Charter Org. Reps., Webelos Leaders, Cubmasters/ Assistant Cubmasters and Pack Committee Members interested in learning basic outdoor camping skills for the Scouts BSA Program. To be considered Position-Specific Trained and be able to recharter as a Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster for 2020, IOLS training MUST be completed!

This course will satisfy the requirements for all Scoutmasters/ Assistant Scoutmasters to be certified as “Trained” in Outdoor Leader Skills.  This course is designed as an introductory course.  It is also recommended for those wishing to take Wood Badge training.

Participants are required to stay overnight as a part of this course.

Packs and Webelos Den overnighters require a one leader that has completed BALOO; however, it is not a required training for completion of Position-Specific Training.

Service Opportunity: Wreaths Across America - December 14, 2019

Pathfinder District's own Keith Karnes is organizing a service opportunity for Scouts through the Wreaths Across America program. We will be laying wreaths at Greenlawn Cemetery (100 W South St, Franklin, IN 46131) at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, December 14, 2019.

If you and your Scouts are interested in participating, there is no need to register; simply be at Greenlawn Cemetery at Noon on December 14th. However, if you have any questions about the event, contact Keith Karnes directly for more information.

Wreaths Across America

The Peace Light is Coming to Pathfinder District

Each year, a youth from Upper Austria brings the light from the grotto in Bethlehem to Austria, where it is distributed at a Service of Dedication to delegations from across Europe who take it back, with a message of Peace, to their own countries for use at ecumenical services throughout the Continent. Scouts and Guides can then take the light on to houses of worship, hospitals, homeless shelters, old people homes, prisons, and places of public, cultural and political importance - to anybody who appreciates the significance of the "gift." Beginning in 2001, the Light was brought to New York for the first time, and since then it has been spread across the Americas as well.

Pathfinder District's own Keith Karnes will be bringing the Peace Light to our December Roundtable on Thursday, December 12th. Any Scouts or Scouters who would like to take the Light back to their Units, Chartering Organizations or other groups, are welcome to join us for our ceremony.

Additionally, Keith Karnes is working on an event for the Peace Light at Grace United Methodist Church on Sunday, December 15th. More information on this event will be provided once it is known.

2020 National Youth Leadership Training Registration Open!

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is an action-packed program designed to provide Scouts with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home units and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. This program is the centerpiece of the council’s youth training opportunities, providing local units with outstanding youth leaders and giving those participants the tools and leadership ideals that will serve them well in whatever they do.

If you loved Wood Badge and learned awesome things that helped you and your Units, then help your youth learn to be better leaders and be able to build a stronger unit together through the NYLT program!

There will be three courses in 2020:
Spring Course: April 3-5 & 17-19, 2020 (must attend both weekends) @ Camp Kikthawenund
Summer Course: Week-Long Course – June 14-20, 2020 @ Camp Red Wing
Fall Course: September 11-13 & 25-27, 2020 (must attend both weekends) @Camp Kikthawenund

2020 Wood Badge Training Registration Now Open!

Wood Badge is advanced Scout leader training that began in 1919 by Lord Baden-Powell, founder of Scouting and Wood Badge’s first director. It came to America in 1948 and has been updated to reflect current BSA policies and programs. Incorporating the best  techniques available, Wood Badge has become the most advanced leadership training course in Scouting!

Wood Badge is the highest level of Scout leadership training and provides participants with the tools to be a well-rounded leader. The leadership skills taught are for volunteers from all Scouting areas including Cub Scouting, Scouts BSA, Venturing and the district and council.

There will be two Crossroads of America courses in 2020:

  • SPRING 2020 COURSE - REGISTRATION - April 24-26 @ Camp Kikthawenund & May 9-10 @ Camp Krietenstein
  • FALL 2020 COURSE - REGISTRATION - Sept. 11-13 @ Ransburg Scout Reservation & Sept. 25-27 @ Camp Krietenstein
