Celebrate National Bike Month

It’s time to hop on your bike and join the thousands of people cycling around the Triangle! If you need to fix up your bike (or earn a free bike), let The ReCYCLEry show you how. Also, stop by the Public Safety building to pick up free bike lights!

Join our Vanpool from Graham

My name is Ruth Holt, and I have been on a vanpool since about 2007 and running my own PART vanpool now since 2011. PART is a wonderful organization, and vanpooling is a terrific way to commute to work in Chapel Hill. You save on gas and wear & tear on your vehicle.

My van is great! We have all sorts of personalities on my van, but we all seem to get along quite well. There is the opportunity to join in conversation, read, listen to music, or have some quiet time. Not to mention, it is wonderful that we are all lessening our carbon footprint. Please take some time to think about joining our van. You would be helping out Mother Earth, and yourself. You might even make a new best friend, like I have!

Check out this vanpool route to see if it matches your commute. For more details, contact Ruth Holt at Worried about not having your car? Employees can use the free Emergency Ride Home program.

Participate in UNC’s Strategic Sustainability Plan

Whether you’re on or off campus this summer, you can join one of six working groups that will help to identify UNC’s sustainability goals and priorities. Join the “Health, Wellness, and Nutrition” group to discuss how transportation can improve our health as individuals and as a community.

Sign up for the June 4 virtual kick-off meeting by contacting Cindy Shea at the UNC Sustainability Office.

Tired of fighting traffic while commuting to UNC?

Let someone else do the driving for you! Vanpools coming from Cary, Graham, Mebane, and Siler City all have seats available. Check out the details of each vanpool to see which one might work for you.

New vanpool forming from Greensboro!

We’re looking for riders coming from the Four Seasons Mall area that will serve UNC’s main campus for a 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. shift (Mon-Fri). If interested, please fill out this form.

UNC offers free carpool-matching

At UNC, you have two options to find carpools. Sign up at or log in with your Onyen at Both websites are free and secure with your personal information. You have the option to only match to UNC affiliates or to match with others, but we always recommend meeting first in a public space (like a coffee shop) before starting the carpool. This also gives you a chance to get to know one another and decide if you want to carpool together. There are no obligations, but think of all the money you’ll save if it works out!

Free bike lights!

May is National Bike Month, and we’re celebrating by offering free bike lights! Stop by the Public Safety building to pick up a pair of front and rear lights.

Tarwheels Club meeting, open to the public

Tarwheels is inviting the public to attend their next meeting on Thursday, May 21 at 6 p.m. at Tobacco Road Sports Cafe in Chapel Hill. The speaker will be Ann Groninger, the North Carolina Bike Law attorney. Ann has been a full-time bicycle lawyer for over 5 years and was one of the creators and the first network lawyer for Bike Law, a national network of cycling attorneys.

Calling all student leaders

Being a student leader means that new students will turn to you when they have questions. When they ask about how to get around campus and beyond, make sure to tell them to check out Zipcar. Zipcar is a service that gives students, faculty and staff round-the-clock access to shared cars at rates that start at just $7.50 an hour – gas and insurance included. The cars are self-service and live right on campus.

Grab a deal made just for student leaders like you! Get started at today and join for just $15, so you can see for yourself what Zipcar is all about. See you on the road soon!
