Working from home?

Over the past few weeks, many of us have had to face the harsh reality of the effects of COVID-19. Not only with the impact on our families and communities, but with our work life. Some of you might have recently switched to a new commute from the coffee pot, or kettle, to your laptop.

Below is a curated list of articles that might be useful to those starting to find a groove while working from home:

Gateways 2020 is now accepting submissions of short papers, demos, panels, tutorials, and workshops on the topic of gateways for science, engineering, or other disciplines.

Topics may include gateway design, use, impact, development processes, sustainability, best practices, use in education, or any other aspect interesting to fellow gateway creators or users. The Gateways 2020 committee also welcomes educational topics directed toward the next generation of creators. Learning Labs (impromptu group discussions and gatherings) will also be welcoming early submissions as well as on-site proposed topics.

  • Tutorials and Workshops: April 28 (new deadline to accommodate COVID-19 interruptions)
  • Short Papers, Demos, and Panels: May 11

Because the COVID-19 outbreak is changing rapidly, we are continuing to plan our October conference while monitoring the situation. In case we have to cancel, we will strive to offer an alternative format, and peer-reviewed, accepted submissions would still be published in the Gateways 2020 Proceedings. Questions, concerns, and suggestions may be sent to

IWSG 2020 (12th International Workshop on Science Gateways)
June 11, 2020

Due to the exceptional circumstances related to COVID-19, IWSG 2020 will take place as a virtual one-day event on 11th June 2020. While we hope that June might allow for travel again, it is just too uncertain. We are aware that some authors are holding back with working on submission because of the uncertainty, so we have decided to allow for more time for the submissions and the deadline is extended to April 6. No further extensions will be granted to allow 5 weeks for the peer-review process that will take place every year. We plan to publish the proceedings in, which will lead to open-access, fully citable publications. We will cut down the presentation time for the virtual event: accepted full papers will result in 15 min talks, accepted abstracts in 5 min talks. This way the program should fit in one day.
The triumvirate of technologies – Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the hybrid late Cloud (Cloud, Fog, Edge), complemented with modern software engineering practices, stimulates the emergence of new approaches to Science Gateways. Blockchain and Smart Contracts could also be instrumental in this respect as they may facilitate decentralized, standards and market-driven aggregation of data and computing resources, which are needed for scientific work. These technologies may also be useful for the development of new Virtual Research Environments and Virtual Labs.

We invite the submission of papers related to Science Gateways. Topics include, but are not limited to:
  • Architectures, frameworks, and technologies for science gateways
  • Science gateways sustaining productive collaborative communities
  • Support for scalability and data-driven methods in science gateways
  • Improving the reproducibility of science in science gateways
  • Science gateway usability, portals, workflows and tools
  • Software engineering approaches for scientific work
  • Aspects of science gateways, such as security and stability
We, in particular, encourage the submissions from application scientists and community members, reporting their experiences with science gateways. There are three forms of presentation:
  • Talks
  • Lightning talks
  • Demonstrations
Submission of a full paper may result in a talk, submission of an abstract may result in a lightning talk or a demonstration. Presenters of full papers will be given a 15-minute time slot to provide a summary and update to their work. Presenters of abstracts will be given a 5-minute time slot.
