Potential Expansion of Cleveland Metroparks South Chagrin Reservation
Cleveland Metroparks is pursuing the acquisition of ±149 acres of the Hawthorne Valley Country Club property that will be protected for future generations to enjoy as part of the South Chagrin Reservation and includes a portion of Hawthorn Creek, a tributary to Tinker’s Creek. Cleveland Metroparks plans to restore the property to its natural state, which includes stream restoration and reforestation, heavily focused along the stream corridor to expand the riparian buffer and open the property for public access. Cleveland Metroparks will maintain the property as a natural, scenic area that will serve as habitat for plants and wildlife. A large pond on the property will offer anglers new fishing opportunities for bluegill and largemouth bass. The property owned by Hawthorne Valley Country Club, LLC was operated as a golf course until 2018.
Welcome to Solon!
Say Hello to Mollie
Solon PD is happy to introduce their newest member! Mollie is a Police Support K9. She officially started working in October, but began training with them a couple months ago. You may have seen her at Coffee with a Cop or Solon Fall Fest.
Mollie's job is to help with police and community support. She promotes employee wellness at SPD and positive community interactions. Try not to smile when you are petting a dog!
Mollie is not a traditional police K9. She is not trained for apprehension or scent detection. She is very docile and doesn't have the drive for it.... which makes her great at her job.
Thanks to Chief Tonelli and Assistant Chief Haines for introducing this idea. Sincere appreciation to Rick Seyler of the Silver Bullet K9 Ministry for raising, training and donating Mollie to SPD. Lt. Bill Vajdich is Mollie's handler and is happy to add this assignment to his duties. More to come soon.
SOLON COMMUNITY LIVING’S BUILDING PLANS APPROVED BY SOLON CITY COUNCIL. CLEARS PATH TO BUILDING UNIQUE POCKET NEIGHBORHOOD FOR ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES.
SOLON, Ohio – Solon Community Living (SCL), a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide a quality, community-accessible, sustainable housing option for adults with developmental disabilities, received final building plan approval from the Solon City Council on October 17. This action gives SCL the ability to proceed and build its unique pocket neighborhood along Clearwater Court off Portz Parkway, just steps away from the Solon Community Recreation Center.
Those final plans include a neighborhood of six homes with ADA-compliant private suites for fourteen individuals. The suites include open floor concept living room and kitchen, accessible bathrooms, bedrooms, laundry rooms and front porch. In addition, a community clubhouse will be constructed with a teaching kitchen, a library/sensory area, gathering spaces and an outdoor terrace. The neighborhood will also offer six caregiver suites on the homes’ second floor that will benefit those caregivers with an economical housing option. Having caregivers on property will address the current caregiver crisis by providing a better work experience for caregiver staff and enhance care and provide an extra layer of safety and security for the residents.
SCL’s Founders, Ara and Leslie Bagdasarian were present, as well as several SCL board members, volunteers, and families. “After six years of planning, acquiring the ideally located property, creating appropriate rezoning with 83% of the vote, and now approval of our final building plans, we have cleared a major milestone and are eager to break ground sometime in mid-2023.” Ara Bagdasarian said after the Council meeting. “We are presently reviewing numerous family applications and look forward to building a community that will serve adult children with developmental disabilities effectively, with love, care, and compassion. We especially want to thank Mayor Kraus, Vice Mayor Nancy Meany, Tom Lobe, Bob Shimits, and every member of Council along with Bill Drsek and his Engineering Staff for their help and support along the way.”
