April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.  Everyone has a role to play in ending sexual assault, harassment, and abuse. Sexual Violence is any action of a sexual nature which is non-consensual and is accomplished through threat, coercion, exploitation, deceit, force, physical or mental incapacitation, and/or power of authority.

Anyone can experience SV, but most victims are women. The perpetrators of this violence are typically men and usually someone known to the victim. However, individuals in same sex relationships can be victims and perpetrators of sexual violence.

Sexual harassment, assault, and abuse can happen anywhere, including in online spaces. For too long harassment, cyberbullying, and sexual abuse and exploitation have come to be expected as typical and unavoidable behaviors online. That is why Building Safe Online Spaces Together is the theme for #SAAM2022. Building Safe Online Spaces Together is possible when we practice digital consent, intervene when we see harmful content and behaviors, and promote online communities that value respect, inclusion, and safety.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month (NCAPM). Child abuse and neglect are any recent acts or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation. Research suggests that in an estimated 30 to 60% of the families where domestic violence is identified, some form of co-occurring child maltreatment is also present.

Educating and spreading the word about child abuse prevention lets your community know they can take action to strengthen families and help them thrive. Together we can strengthen families and prevent child abuse. #ThrivingFamilies Learn more here.

Make sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram as we will be sharing resources and other helpful information throughout the month.
April is also Volunteer Appreciation Month. The Haven is appreciative of all the volunteers who donate their time, much-needed items, and monetary contributions to support its mission. Your hard work and dedication was extremely important these past couple of years.

The truth is The Haven couldn't work towards their mission of eliminating domestic violence and sexual violence in the Northern Neck and Essex County without you. The organization was founded by volunteers who recognized the need to support survivors. Thirty six years later, volunteers continue to support individuals and families in need.
